Real-World Connection

Introduction to lesson: Video of a student talking about why it is important to be able to write both formally and informally using real-world scenarios.

Activating prior knowledge through learning activity: Have students answer the following question independently in the form of a discussion board. What are some events that would require you to write formally? What are some events that would require you to write informally? Talk about a time you used one of these tones in your writing and what it was for.

Learning Activity: Have students watch a video talking about the key differences between informal and formal tones in writing. Also include an online anchor chart that they can refer to during the independent practice.

Independent Practice: Given a blank t-chart, have the students drag the different components to the correct section of the t-chart labeled either informal writing or formal writing.

Learning Activity: Have students watch a video of professionals (doctors, young adults, etc) explaining how they use formal writing in their day to day lives. Then, have students watch a video of students and teenagers explaining how they use informal writing in their day to day lives.

Performance Assessment: Have students work together in an online setting to role play a real-life scenario. Provide multiple options (a doctor and patient, student applying for college, student writing an outline for a class, etc) to demonstrate their learning. For this, the students will work together to create either a formal tone or informal tone depending upon scenario they choose. Students will then record themselves stating the scenario and reading their final product.

Feedback/Peer Review: After groups have uploaded their videos to the learning platform, require students to independently choose two videos to listen to. After listening to each video, have students comment on the video stating:

Glow

Grow

How they knew what type of writing it was.

Summative Assessment: Give students a scenario and have them create their own formal or informal writing depending upon the purpose. Give specific guidelines and the use of a checklist to help guide the students.

Use the following questions to help guide you.

Did you use capital letters and correct punctuation?

Did you write in complete sentences?

Learning Activity: Students watch a video describing how that activity was an example of informal writing.

Learning Activity: With your assigned peer, work together (virtually) to come up with a paper trying to convince your dream college or job to accept you.

Learning Activity: After creating the paper, what did you notice?
