Unit 1 Research plays an integral role in the success of any business organisation. During this week key terms were highlighted and defined to ensure greater understanding throughout the course. This unit gave an introduction to research, research methods and also discussed the issues relating to research. The various types of research strategies were also highlighted; these include qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods. A very important reminder is that the researcher by all means must avoid unethical practices when conducting research. What caught my attention the most is the role of technology in research. In this new technological era, so many new technological innovations are now accessible to assist with the research process. This therefore makes it easier to conduct research. The advent of technology such as computers, the Internet, and social media has enabled the research process to become unproblematic.

Unit 2 This unit was indeed a very interesting one as it has expanded my knowledge on the research process. Upon completion of this unit I am now able to describe the nature of the research process, summarize the steps involved and compile a literature review. The steps of the research process include problem definition, research design, measurement, data collection, data analysis and the research findings. In addition, I was also able to understand the purpose for establishing the literature review. Its main aim is to give the researcher a comprehensible picture of the information that already exists on a research topic. My main take away from this week’s presentation is the process of writing the literature review. I paid very close attention to this aspect as I would so be making application of this in my research proposal.

Unit 3 Communication is an essential aspect of the research process. It is key to all stakeholders’ i.e. the researcher, respondents, interviewers etc. During this week I was also able to communicate research findings accurately. This was evident in my attempt of using the screen-castomatic recording which turned out very well. I was so excited to put my presentation together and create a recording (see attached).Additionally, I understood the structure of the research report and what each part entailed. This unit has prepared me for what lies ahead. What caught my attention most was that my writing should persuade the readers that the identified problem is worthy of investigation.

Orientation This week of orientation was important for me as it allowed me to meet the team of individuals that I will be along with during this semester. I was able to introduce myself, share my expectations and also understand the expectations of my cc and e-tutor.During this week I was also able to navigate the page and understand where everything is located, thus enabling me to understand my role and how I can better apply myself to earn great results.

This week was certainly a very hectic one; the draft for the research proposal was due. This therefore required me to put most, if not all of the things that I have learnt into practice. Based on the unit presented I am now able to explain the reason why a sample is used in place of a census. Additionally, sampling techniques were also identified, and their advantages and disadvantages noted. When selecting the appropriate sampling design there must be accurate requirements, available resources and knowledge availability. My favourite sampling technique is simple random sampling a probability method; this is so as it considers all members of the population thus giving everyone an equal chance of selection.

This week’s presentation focused on data collection. This refers to information collected, stored, and processed in an organized manner to meet the goals of a research development. This can be collected through manual or electronic mediums, and can either be quantitative or qualitative. Furthermore, the types of data were discussed in great detail. These include primary and secondary data. Primary data refers to data that the researcher collects originally/ first hand. On the contrary secondary data speaks to data that has already been in existence. The collection methods as well as the advantages and disadvantages were discussed. My main take away from this week’s lesson is the standard of data collection. One should be mindful that the data collected must be timely reliable, complete and of good quality.

These include defining the objectives, determining the sampling group and actually writing the questionnaire.

During this week’s presentation the importance of displaying data was discussed. The display of data must be accurate, concise and understandable. Most importantly the presentation should appeal to the audience. In addition, the tasks involved in data entry, cleaning and modification were discussed. These tasks are crucial in ensuring that all data problems are dealt with effectively to guarantee an excellent final product.

Furthermore, it is to be noted that the display method is determined by the data collected. Consequently, tables are used to display a large amount of data and graphs or charts for visual or easily detected patterns.

The countdown has begun for the end of semester and definitely the pressure was on. During this week our final presentation (research report) was required and also a graded discussion. This was rather challenging however, I managed quite well to have both completed in a timely manner. Furthermore, the main focus of this week was on data analysis, a summary of the basic qualitative data analysis processes was outlined, additionally the processes involved in analysing qualitative data was discussed thus enabling a greater understanding. It was noted that when analysing qualitative data it should be done using the appropriate data analysis techniques.
Additionally, I was able to distinguish between the roles of the researcher and software programmes in the analysis of qualitative data. This week’s unit has afforded me the opportunity to differentiate between two widely used terms; these include descriptive and inferential statistics. In conclusion, I can say that this unit was indeed a very interesting one as it leaves with me a wealth of knowledge that can be applied to everyday life or be utilized in the near future.
