Is social media slowly taking over your life? Life should be lived in real time and not behind a screen however with social media it is easy to avoid human interaction in real life as it helps with many of our problems. For instance, social media apps such as Netflix, TikTok, or the latest app-based game distracts us and cause us to run away from the many challenges we face. Avoiding such problems in life cause us to be unable to cope difficulties in the future. Personally, I agree that social media is harmful for teens.

In the modern world , many retail businesses are trying to step up their social media game to reach out to more people especially youngsters. (Point) One example is how Alibaba introduced Taobao , an online e-commerce shop in May 2003. The advertisement of the brand was far-reaching and it reached out to almost all the people using social media. With the boost of online advertising on platforms like Instagram and Facebook , the sales of the company greatly increased making Jack Ma , one of the brand creators the richest in China with a net worth of 43 billion USD. (Example) Small businesses are also using short video as a way to find new audience, such as teenagers, who might have never heard of them or their products before. (Explain) In 2018, Douyin, the leading Chinese short-video platform, as part of a social responsibility initiative to alleviate poverty in China, launched a campaign to help individual farmers and small businesses in China's mountainous areas sell farm produce. (Example). Therefore, social media is a useful as an e-commerce platform for teenagers to consume goods and services. (Link)

Firstly, in the age of technology advancements ,many teenagers are addicted to social media apps such as Instagram , tiktok , Netflix etc and many have begun neglecting their health as a result . They would spend hours on social media , often staying up late consumed by their devices. Excessive time would then be spent staring at the screens, evoking negative effects on one's eyesight. Due to the predominat use of apps in our day-to-day life , there has been an increase in the number of teenagers suffering from myopia. Research has shown that up to 90% of Asian teenagers suffer from myopia, which is way more compared to adults . Therefore, social media is harmful to teens as it may lead us to live an unhealthy lifestyle.

One harmful effect of social media is the presence of toxic online communities. There have been recent trends of teenagers constantly degrading themselves by comparing their looks and self-image with famous celebrities or top class models on widely used social media platforms such as tiktok and Instagram. Such toxic trends may lead them to have low self-esteem or severe mental health issues such as depression which may potentially lead to suicide. A survey conducted by the Royal Society for Public Health asked 14-24 year olds in the UK how social media platforms impacted their health and wellbeing. The survey results found that Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram all led to increased feelings of depression, anxiety, poor body image and loneliness. Hence, the toxic online communities is harmful to teenagers.

One of the problems that addiction can affect teenagers by is leading them to be distracted from their studies.

I disagree that social media is detrimental to teenagers as social media and technology offers us greater convenience and connectivity. It allows us to stay connected with family and friends worldwide via email, text, FaceTime, etc. It also gives us quick access to information and research or the latest news about the world. Many researchers have proven that social media helps spread news faster then local televison. This is because 75% of the world's population owns at least 1 social media account. With such a large number, it’s not a doubt that news will reach from one end of the world to the other in just a swipe.

Social media can be a form of entertainment for teenagers. (Point) There are certain social media platforms like YouTube which connect them to their favourite content creators to ease the burden off their shoulders when they are stressed about the examination period or want to pass time. (Example) There a lot of funny videos online and having a laugh can distract them from the stress they are facing.
