Duality

many religions use the concept of "dual nature" to describe and explain the struggle within a person to choose between good and evil. - Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde are a representation of the duality in human nature, Jekyll is the good side while Hyde is the evil side, Jekyll failed to control Mr Hyde, and therefor his "evil" has become stronger than his good.
This could be due to Jekyll's unhealthy compression of his emotions and his more "evil" thoughts and actions, that a "expected Victorian gentleman" cannot express, as they must be men who act on morals, a decrease in their reputation can ruin their life. so it can be argued that it was the high "Victorian standards" that led Jekyll taking the path into becoming what he is now.
