CASE 1: Love may not be present because this is simply admiration. One longs to be the other because of what she can do and not who she is.
Case 2: love may be on the part of Dennis because of his commitment to her but on the part of Elaine, she could not look beyond the material things that Dennis used to give her.
Case 3: There is love when the reason for their break up is to know that it is for the good of both parities. It may be painful but it hd to be done. Love is not always about being together. To love is to let go and be happy in knowing that the other is growing because you allowed another to.
Case 4: There is love because when he decided to marry her, he chose to marry her fully including her past as manifested by her child.

LOVE is the willingness to extend oneself for the other person's growth, which in turn will cultivate our own growth in the process
AUTHENTIC LOVE RISES ABOVE FEELINGS, WHICH ARE TEMPORARY AND GOES AWAY.
LOVE IS AN ACT OF THE WILL, and therefore, entails a free decision and effortful commitment, or a daily yes to love the other even at times when they are difficult to love.

We human beings are created in God's image and likeness and therefore, called to love in the way God loves. We are relational beings. It is our very nature to share our lives with others and in this sharing, we become more and more who God intended us to be.

Because God is love, it is what enabled us to be and it is ingrained in who we are

It is in and through Jesus that we get to see fully how God loves us

4 types of love;
Eros: sexual/romantic love
Storge: natural affection or liking
Philia: friendship
Agape:
There is more to loving than what is expressed in Eros, Storge, and Philia

Thought
C.S. Lewis began "The Four Loves" as a study of what he believed were the two types of love operating in the world. These were "gift-love," which is illustrated by a man working to provide for his family, and "need-love," which is illustrated by a child seeking the comfort of a mother's embrace. Lewis then added a third category, which he called "appreciative love." Lewis went on to define the way these three types of love are manifested in the relationships between God and humanity: In need-love, the human "cries to God from our poverty"; in gift-love, the human "longs to serve, or even to suffer for, God"; and in appreciative love, the human says to God, "We give thanks to thee for thy great glory." As Lewis researched and reflected, he refined his thinking. He developed his ideas about love into four categories, which are the four types of love developed in the rest of the book.

Affection
Affection is based on the Greek word "storge." Lewis defined this type of love as being based on familiarity. It occurs naturally between people who find themselves together by no act of their own, and "it ignores the barriers of age, sex, class and education." Affection is humble, and often taken for granted. Two examples of affection are the love between a child and a caretaker and the love between people and their pets.

Friendship
Friendship is based on the Greek word "philia." This is the type of love found between family and friends. It is also found between people who not only have common interests and activities, but who care about the same things, even if they disagree. Lewis considered friendship to be much more narrowly defined than mere companionship, and he believed that few people, particularly in the modern world, really experience true friendship. Friendship must include appreciative love, but it is more than appreciation. Lewis said that friendship "is the instrument by which God reveals to each the beauties of all the others."

Eros
Eros is the type of love that people describe when they refer to "being in love." Lewis distinguished eros from sexuality, which he called Venus. The difference is that Venus seeks a sexual relationship with another person, but eros seeks an emotional connection with that person. It is eros that transforms need-love into appreciative love.

Charity
Charity is based on the Greek word "agape." Charity is the highest of the four loves, and it is a Christian virtue. Charity is unconditional, not based on any desirable characteristic of the object of love. It is the only one of the four types of love that is self-sufficient. The love of God for his people is charity. Humans cannot love one another or love God without receiving God's love first and allowing his love to transform all their other loves.

Characteristics of Christ's love

merciful (Inclusive) Jesus elevated the understanding of what love is. Love is not only for those who are love-able or those who are easy to love (pagans can also do that)
True Christian loving involves loving those who are difficult to love - our enemies.
In our day and age, we re called to love not only our enemies but also those people whom we do not usually associate with. Pope Francis calls us to love those at the peripheries of our society.

Selfless/Sacrificing
Jesus tells us that great love involves sacrifice. It is not self-directed but it is other-centered.\God did not have to create us but he did so out of love. he gave us freedom knowing that we may use it not to respond to him in love but in sin. By loving us, God became vulnerable.
Of course, who can forget about Jesus on the cross? That's the proof of the immense love God has for us.
Faithful
Jesus' Fidelity to God is so great that despite all his fears and doubts, he entrusted himself to the will of the Father. True love involves faithfulness.
We may not know what lies ahead of us but we continue to say yes because we love.
Remember God continued to be faithful to us despite the numerous times we turned our backs on him. He still loves us no matter what
