Description : A wall that is constructed along the coast to prevent the sea from advancing onto the land. Benefits : It protects people and properties and environments from coastal floods and erosion. Limitations : Economically, it is costly a) to be built to protect communities from flooding or sea level rise especially for developing countries. b)as it requires regular maintenance and monitoring. Socially, informal communities may need to be evicted to construct these structures. Eg. informal communities in Jakarta, Indonesia have been evicted. Justification for its importance :

Though expensive, the seawalls can be installed fast, in about 2 to 3 weeks, depending on length, material used, and if debris or rock is present. As such, it helps to overcome problems of flooding faced by coastal communities fast.
