The first Freedom ride took place May 4, 1961, 6 whites and 7 African Americans boarded two buses. Going form D.C. to the deep south. The first week the riders experienced minor hostility but by the second week they received severe beatings and outside of Alabama one of the buses were burned. They intended to test the Supreme Court's ruling in Boynton v. In 1956 Ralph Abernathy and Martin Luther King Jr. were leaders to Montgomery bus boycott in response to Rosa Parks case. 

On May 25, 1961 Rev. Abernathy was arrested on breach of peace charges after escorting William Sloane Coffin's Connecticut Freedom ride to the Montgomery Greyhound bus terminal.
