Pigs are omnivores, which means that they consume both plants and animals. In the wild, they are foraging animals, primarily eating leaves, roots, fruits, and flowers, in addition to some insects and fish. As livestock, pigs are fed mostly corn and soybean meal with a mixture of vitamins and minerals added to the diet.

For ewes, non-lactating and in the first 15 weeks of gestation, little more than maintenance of weight, a gain of 0.07 Ib. daily, is expected, and in the last 6 weeks of gestation the expected gain is 0.37 Ib. daily. Requirements for lactation are given in 2 parts. In the first 8 to 10 weeks a weight loss of 0.08 Ib. per day and a milk yield of 3.0 Ib. per day, produced with a net efficiency of 60 per cent. in terms of digestible energy, are expected. In the last 12 to 14 weeks of lactation a gain of 0.07 Ib. is expected and a 50 per cent. drop of milk production in the second half of lactation is assumed. https://www.cabdirect.org/cabdirect/mobile/abstract/19581401447

It is common to not adapt a cows dietary intake until the final two months of pregnancy. The uterus takes up more space in the body, causing the animal’s voluntary intake to decrease. During lactation, cows also tend to have less of a desire to eat, particularly right after giving birth. Their abdomen is still swollen inside and the rumen will take a few days to adjust to its former size after calving.
