The behaviour from the story which I identified was the stone throwing as soon as the Lottery was over, as soon as Mr. Summers said to the community "Let's finish quickly", the whole community picked up rocks without second-guessing themselves, and thinking about their actions. "The children had stones already", this shows that the kids were already brainwashed into being compliant to the community leader and doing what they were told to do (throw rocks at the lottery winner as soon as the lottery was over). The environment played a massive role on the actions of the characters since it caused them to behave inhumanly, when they were told by a leader and everyone around them were also doing the action without thinking about the consequences.

They did not do this because they wanted to, they did this because it is what so many others had done before them and what many will do after them. Tradition. The villagers had an unhealthy environment and believed that if they were to not go through with the lottery, then bad things would happen to them. As this belief has been rooted into their village for so long, the people inside the village see that they have no choice and must kill the lottery 'winner'.

The behaviour I identified was the kids following Bobby Martin the kid who started the whole stone throwing. " Bobby Martin had already stuffed his pockets full of stones, and the other boys soon followed his example." This suggests that the children were against the community leader to begin with. After Mr. Summer stated to finish quickly after the Lottery was over. The whole village started picking up rocks without thinking of the consequences. All the rock throwing was due to the impact of the environment since the actions committed were dehumanising.

A similar situation in the world is happening in Palestine where Ahmad Abu Marhia was found beheaded because he was gay. Some background on the situation, is that homosexuality is rejected within the most socially and religiously conservative parts of both Palestinian and Israeli societies but gay people in Israel can freely lead their lives. Ahmad received multiple death threats because of his sexuality, sonce he was "different" than the people around him. He ended up being kidnapped and executed in front of a bank. This is a prime example of someone who is different getting punished unfairly just because they were different.

Furthermore, even though it is compleatly luck-based, some villegers say that it wasn't and nobody believes them. Lastly, even though there are only 300 people in the village, and everyone knew eachother, they still had the ability to stone someone else to death, which shows the brainwashing done from previous generations.

The behavior is seen in today's world as a great example for it could be early child marriage. The similarities these both traditions have are that they are unnecessary but people do them anyway the reasoning behind these marriages is varied, sometimes parents set the marriage and they do not tend to elaborate with their child who, and why. They simply do it for economic purposes as it means less food on the table for them.

The first thing that was done when receiving the money from the scratch ticket was buying themselves an SG arrangement not because they particularly liked it so much but because everyone else had one so they should as well. The problem with society in this regard is the pressure to be like others and have certain things that others do. The way that the father explains their situation to Eva made me think of how we view these places, often only hearing about what goes on in those countries through the news. I think it is important to try and not have a closed view on these people living in these places the way that the father did, saying he didn't understand why they would leave their yard and that it was good for them to have come to be a SG. Not realising that often there is no choice and that this is not something they freely decides to do.

The behaviour that I found the most interesting was the screaming of Mrs. Hutchinson of the injustice of such an act. Everyone from the village knows what the tradition is and what "the winner" has to go through, yet no one opposes this idea, in fact it is described how some are "excited" before the lottery is conducted. However only when she is stoned she cries out that it is wrong. This shows how because no one else speaks out against the idea, she doesn't either, yet when it comes down to it she opposes the idea because she is the victim. Perhaps she was also scared of speaking out at first and only when she had nothing left to loose she speaks out against it.

Such behaviour shows to me how society is able to suppress our true emotions and beliefs, since we try to fit the "norm". If more people would have spoken up against the stoning earlier, more people would have joined them. What would have to change is the amount of courage that people have the strength in their beliefs. However, since this is a tradition it is more difficult to change even though as described in the beginning other states have stopped conducting the lottery.

This is evident on several levels in the story. Most obviously the Semplica Girls who are "other" and come from poor families and countries and hence can be enslaved. The narrator's family is also treated differently because they have less money than their peers. This is illustrated when Lily's friend only shows genuine interest in their friendship after they got SGs. Eva is also treated with extra care. Although she released the SGs which society considers bad and her family is in huge trouble because of it, her parents don't want to scold her. This is because they view her as fragile and believe that getting her in trouble may change the trajectory of her life.

Two examples that come to mind in today's society are the production of luxury goods or the market of prostitution.

Similarly to the "SG"s, expensive phones or clothes are highly valued in social circumstances to illustrate success. However, these are produced unethically, either in poor working conditions, sweatshops run under child labour, or through unethical acquisition of materials. These values are superficial, having women serving as decorations are not inertly a symbol of wealth, just as clothes that are marked with a certain symbol does not mean that the person wearing them is successful.
Adding on to this, prostitution is also an area of work that young women are forced in due to their circumstances. They join the market in hopes of living better lives, and not because they necessarily want to.

Generally, this story impressed me with its tone and writing style. I loved how the simple grammar and the short sentences juxtaposed the "perfect future" that was supposed to be illustrated in the story. When we think of the future, we think of innovations and hope for a better world, but truthfully, the story demonstrated that even these characters in a deemed "perfect" society face the same flaws that we do in ours today.

The action in the short story was the stoning. Even though it is extremely inhumane to stone someone to death, the citizens living in the village clearly promoted the action since it has been a tradition for more than 50 years in their village.

It is possible to augment the tradition of stoning a person to death but it would be extremely complicated because most of the village follow the tradition therefore it would take a large group of people to stand up against the leader and force him to change it.

There are many behaviours such as in the story that exist today. An example that comes to mind is arranged marriages at an early age. Many cultures have the standard of marrying their children when they are only 12-14 years old which is clearly way too young of an age to marry someone.

I think that one common example with the lottery could be Indian island in the Indian Ocean that are cannibalistic. They kill any outsiders that come to their island and then eat them, which is similarly to the lottery, also very extreme and without a purpose or reason.

The action could be changed because, if some people start to rise up, then the lottery could be ended. Although, people could be scared to rise up because maybe they will fail and chosen to be stoned.
