  • Citation Notes: When settlers moved West, they took land that had previously never been owned by a single person. Animals and nomadic Native Americans could travel when and where they pleased. Several important businesses grew up once settlers moved in: cattle herding, cattle or sheep ranching, and farming. Ranchers and farmers wanted to protect their pasture land and crops from animals. To do so they needed barriers which would keep them out. Cattle herders, relied on access to free land and watering holes and streams, which fences kept them out of. This inevitably led to conflicts, which sometimes turned deadly.
