Firstly, the Catholic Church's attitude is that taking ones life is a mortal sin. Francis' action in this novel would have to been sin as sinful and an embarrassment to his family. 

The subject of guilt is also crucial in this novel. Guilt is often associated with the Catholic faith with many Catholic people claiming to feel extreme levels of guilt with regards to their actions and their need for penance. Perhaps, Cormier is suggesting that Francis's catholism is the root of his guilt throughout the novel.
