“Rally Round the West Indies” was composed by David Rudder and released in 1988. It was released for his album “Haiti” and later became the national anthem for The West Indies Cricket Team. Rallying is usually referred to as the coming together of troops in order to continue fighting after a defeat. The title was appropriate since he popularity of cricket started to decline when the public became more interested in other sports like football. This occurred around 1988 so this song was exactly what the West Indies Cricket team needed; to encourage the cricket fans to come together and continue to support the team. The mood of the song is one of a rallying war cry where Rudder is begging his people to unite in the face of adversity.

Michael Holding is a former West Indian fast bowler for a period of 12 years. During the last stages of his career Holding came under fire for not performing as well as he should. According to “Rallying round the Windies", “He had failed to take a single wicket in his final two Tests; his last 5 Tests yielded him 5 wickets, and he retired one short of 250 career wickets.” Rudder uses the imagery of warrior in these lines because Holding was an experienced cricketer who “fought” on the West Indies Cricket Team for 12 years. He was now hated by his supporters and being asked to leave the team. The battle Holding and his other teammates are facing is the cricket match. They are battling the other cricket teams on the field for victory to make their countries proud. Holding being unable to perform as expected ‘fell’ under the pressure of the cricket match therefore leading him to retire. (Balantrapu)

This song has become a national anthem for the supporters of the West Indies Cricket team. DJs at cricket matches blast this tune as a war cry at all test matches. According to (Rohlehr, 2008), the song is a “fervent call for faith in the capacity of Caribbean people” and the society that the cricket team represents should support the team with its fervent and faith. The cricket team was made by players strung together from disparate isles in the 1880’s. Even though there was conflict they still rose above it for the love of the sport and this song represents that. Hence, I would classify this song as a sporting chant and cultural and history lesson.
