He died there without any interesting findings and nobody found any reason to explore anymore. New Spain (Mexico) divided California into two parts, Baja California and Alta California. In 1821, Mexico gained independence from Spain. Alta California became more of a territory than a state. Mexico and America later had many disputes about land. America wanted the land that Mexico owned (Including California and Texas). U.S. won the war and gained the land. It was then declared a state.
