On the surface, this seems as if Julian loves his uncle, and it seems as if he a good uncle who is just watching for his nephew and needing to know where he is going for practical reasons. Although this is what it seems like to the average viewer without any context, if there is anything that we know from reading this book, it is that Julian resents his uncle, and there are multiple instances the prove that, including this quote. After reading this novel up until this quote, we know that Julian is just trying not to get in trouble with his aunt in uncle, as they punish him for almost anything and he is just proposing the idea that they could find out what he was doing. Julian also makes it sound like Sibley is a bad influence but maybe he is just a person who likes rules. This doesn’t necessarily mean that Julian thinks Sibley is a bad person, but it does make it sound like he doesn’t like him.
