In order for an object to change direction, the force that is exerted must be very strong. If this force is exerted by the thrusters, it can cause the velocity of the pod to change. Instead of continuing in the same direction, it will go in the opposite direction. When using the thrusters to push in the opposite direction the pod would have attached to the shuttle instead of bouncing... which it didn't with opposing force and velocity the pod has no choice but to stay on the shuttle because of force and gravity
