Social behavior provides many benefits to species that practice it. Communication to other members of a species is helpful to increase their overall likelihood of survival. In altruism, easily presumed selfish animals lower their fitness, or a measure of an individual's hereditary contribution to the next generation, to help other members of its social group.

If an animal sees a predator, to warn their herd, they may use something such as pronking. Pronking alarms the rest of the herd, but makes the individual visible to predators. For example, if a springbok saw a predator nearby, the individual organism would continuously jump up and down to warn the other animals in its herd. By putting itself at risk, the animals in the herd are protected. With the herd of animals surviving, this increases an individual's likelihood of survival because it is harder for a predator to hunt groups of their prey.

Altruism is an adaptive behavior because it is becoming a natural instinct for animals to protect each other in their group. When a predator is near, it is necessary for the animals to adapt to this environment. To adapt to the presence of a predator, animals lower their fitness to protect the other animals in their group. By reacting to this situation, animals are able to protect and communicate with species.

Social Behavior has benefited species and their ability to survive in different environments. Even though other forms of social behavior have a great impact on different species, altruism has helped the population of a species overall. Since an animal is willing to lower its fitness to warn the other organisms, the overall population of the species is benefited. This will help that specific species meet its carrying capacity because of their ability to communicate by sending warnings of predators.
