John shows little to no respect for anyone, especially his teachers, but as we get farther into the movie he starts coming around and by the end of the movie he finally starts to show empathy and kindness to the other students. In the movie they consider John the criminal of the group, he likes to rebel and make other people uncomfortable. When John opens up about his life at home the other students laugh at him and brush it off as a joke the only one that doesn't is Claire because she can relate in a way. At the end of the movie Claire and John end up working together to get back at their parents.

Andrew Clark

Andrew was on the wrestling team, he was the typical athlete. His dad was also a jock in high school. Andrew's dad was constantly pushing him to do better. Andrew was unable to think for himself because his dad was pressuring him to be just like him. Andrew knows that he doesn't like wrestling but only does it so he won't disappoint his dad. The reason he was in detention was also because of the pressure his dad put on him

Brian Johnson

Brian is a very nice kid, he doesn't have many friends so he made friends with the janitor at the school. He's also easily embarrassed by the other kids at his school. But when Bender shows the bag of marijuana Brian quickly gets up and asks permission to smoke it when Andrew says no Brian gets up and smokes it anyway. Brian was incredibly disappointed in himself for failing his shop assignment. Brian hates feeling like a failure in school because that's all he had, he nearly resorted to taking his own life. But everyone including himself laughed it off because of how ridiculous it was.

Claire Standish

Claire was the most popular girl in the school she was considered to be the snobby queen bee. When Andrew asked the group if they wanted to end up like their parents Claire said "Not me" meaning that she did not wish to follow in her parent's footsteps. Claire is unhappy because she feels like she pretending to be someone that she is not. She also mentions that her parents are constantly fighting she doesn't feel loved. At the end of the movie the group forces Claire the admit to being a virgin, she is upset but she explains to them that she's not interested in that, she wants to feel loved and respected by someone.

Allison Reynolds

Allison comes off as off-putting and weird, she is anxious about making friends, she bites her nails, and her anger often switches to laughter. She has a poor self-image of herself and she was described as a compulsive liar. Deep down she would love to have friends and a romantic partner but because of her poor self-image, she struggles with that. Allison says "When you grow up, the heart dies" Allison is enjoying all of the new friends that she made in detention, the group was discussing what was going to happen to them when detention was over, Allison assured the group that she would stay friends with them no matter what. She was afraid of losing the bond that she had created with the other students.

VP Vernon

Mr. Vernon was not about messing around, he was very no-nonsense. He does not take jokes making fun of him lightly, after John had insulted him 7 times he gave Bender 2 months in detention. After John is caught by VP Vernon after stealing marijuana from a locker, Vernon locks John in a storage closet and threatens John's future. Vernon even tests John by asking "Just one swing" After John refuses Veron calls him a "Gutless turd". At the end of the movie, VP Veron is reading the essay written by Brian that he had assigned them to write, the letter states that Vernon can't accept them for who they are, and he failed to break them. While reading the letter Vernon recalls that Carl the janitor told him not to rely on the kids to him feel better about himself. After reading the letter Vernon realizes what Carl said was correct

Allison is a dynamic character

I would consider Allison a dynamic character because, at the beginning of the movie she barely spoke, she squeaked, made rude comments, and laughed at the wrong times. Like I said before Allison had a poor self-image, the only person that was able to break this barrier that she was placing was Andrew. The first time Andrew and Allison speak is when he asks her "What's your poison" They end up talking about their reasons for being in detention. She explains to the group that she is only there because she has nothing better to be doing. As we get farther into the film you can see that Allison is starting to feel comfortable around Andrew. Andrew asks Allison if everything is okay Allison tries her best to mask her emotions but then Andrew asks her "is it your parents" Allison looks at Andrew and nods. Andrew assures Allison that she is not alone and that he also has issues with his family, in this moment we finally see that Allison is starting to open up and talk about her emotions truthfully. Claire gives Allison a makeover to make her feel better about herself. Allison's new look catches Andrew's eye, at the end of the movie he gives her a goodbye kiss. While I still believe that Allison will always be her quirky self, her self-esteem issues and her fear of having friends and a romantic partner certainly changed from the beginning of the movie.

Claire is a dynamic character

Claire is considered the princess of Shermer High. Claire values her popularity. At the beginning of the movie when she is in the principal's office she says "I think there's been a mistake, I know it's detention but I don't belong here". Her father is very wealthy, she wears expensive clothes and we see her dad driving a BMW at the beginning of the movie. She is very frustrated that she has to spend her weekend in detention. She feels as if she doesn't belong in detention because of her social status at the school. The other students in detention pick on Claire because that she is living in easy mode. She gets whatever she wants without having to work for it and she has a large group of friends. But we eventually find out that Claire's parents are always fighting and she believes that it has to do with her. At the beginning of the movie, we see Claire is confident but when the group forces Claire to admit in front of everyone that she is a virgin you can see Claire get defensive and embarrassed. Claire also admits that she is very follow the leader, she will always go along with what her friends say. She also says that she is tired of pretending to be someone that she is not. Eventually, Claire learns that she needs to accept responsibility for her actions and she also learns to embrace and accept her and other's differences. Claire and John also get together to get back at their parents. Claire's parents expect conformity so Johns's rebellious look and personality would throw off Claires parents.
