Some individuals with Autism have hyperlexia. This is characterized by "intense focus or preoccupation with numbers and letters, the early and spontaneous ability to read words, and a large gap between word level decoding, and comprehension" 

Readers with hyperlexia are often fluent readers, and great word recognition, but struggle to understand what they are. reading is very poor.

Students with ASD often struggle to add new words to their vocabulary through reading.

Students with ASD struggle with text comprehension because they have  deficits in theory of mind, weak central coherence, and executive functioning.

For readers with ASD they struggle with relating the text to their life, and this makes it very difficult for them to comprehend the text. Individuals need to be able to think intentionally while they are reading, and that is very difficult for those with ASD.

Some students with ASD struggle to integrate the words into meaningful phrases because of cognitive resources be used trying to make the sound of each word. 

Reading fluency is only possible when decoding words have become automatic, which can often be a difficult skill. 

Although reading fluency can be difficult for those with ASD, this skills is imperative for them to be able to put meaning behind text.
