Ambrose E. Burnside replaced Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan after McClellan failed to pursue Gen. Robert E. Lee's army aggressively after the Battle of Antietam.

Maj. Gen. Ambrose E. Burnside developed a plan to beat Gen. Robert E. Lee to the Confederate capital of Richmond by rapidly moving toward the Rappahannock River and crossing it. Burnside planned to position himself between Lee's army and the direct route to Richmond while also creating a stable supply chain to Washington. Burnside's plan required him to be fast but due to delays for pontoon bridges, since the bridges leading to Fredericksburg had been destroyed previously, allowed Lee to gather the surrounding armies of Gen. James Longstreet and Gen. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson.

Burnside decides to send a landing party to clear out the riflemen and establish a bridgehead. 
On December 12, Burnside's army crosses the river and occupies Fredericksburg. Burnside plans to use the men in Major General William B. Franklin's Left Grand Division to eliminate Lee's southern flank that's held by Jackson. 
On December 13, the Union began the assault against Jackson which was initially successful. Maj. Gen. George G. Mead briefly pierced Jackson's line and threatened the Confederate right, but due to a lack of coordinated reinforcements and Jackson's counterattack, there was little gain for both sides. The area was later known as the Slaughter Pen.

Six weeks following the Battle of Fredericksburg, Burnside is removed from command and appointed Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker as the commander of the Army of the Potomac.

Due to the victory at Fredericksburg, the Confederate Army had enough confidence to triumph against the Union Army at the Battle of Chancellorsville in May of 1863. Since Fredericksburg was the first and only battle Gen. Burnsides led, the shift in command caused problems amongst the troops on the bottom, so a problem in communication became apparent, leading to delays in directions given to the Union Army.
