She was locked away and her medical license was taken for being Jewish but that didn't stop her from practicing in an empty bedroom. She went great lengths to make her research become heard even when it was illegal for her to do so. She was a workaholic that never let any obstacles get in the way of it. It was almost saddening to me that Wu was so tied up in her work that she didn't pay attention to the outside world. I understand how much her education and teachings mattered to her, but I also feel like these 2 women did nothing else but that. She even put her health at risk throughout her time working with radioactive elements, actinium, for her Marie Curie. It is sad she had to endure these burns to have a revelation of a new radiation. After learning about Rita Levi-Montalcini it was wowing to know how dedicated she was, to even smuggle mice onto a plane. It was learning moment to understand the hard work she did throughout conducting her experiments in incubators, outside her dorm, to growing nerve cells. A question I would have for her would be how did she do it all? Both of these women beat the concept of time. It’s disappointing to think that herself and the people around her disregarded something like that. I also thought they had a poor excuse to dismiss the sores and who knows how things could have played out had she gotten those checked early on. I am having trouble understanding the concept of Lamarr’s discovery but I would also like clarification on how and where she obtained the knowledge to make such a discovery. The reading does not talk much about her schooling so I am curious to know how she knew about the technicalities of communication and the discovery she would go on to make. Lastly, something I liked from her story was the value that her father placed on independence. I connect to this in that this is my approach to my students and one day my children. I highly value independence and its one of the best traits that an individual can have. Lamarr’s father set up a great structure for his daughter which was also something commendable, in and of itself.
