When you approach poetry and are put under time constraints, it is helpful to read in a way in which you hear yourself, pay close attention to the poem and what it is saying, and if possible have a dictionary by your side. By doing this ultimately you will be able to analyze and fully understand the poem you are reading.

The central purpose of a poem is the poem's goal. This goal may be as simple as telling a story or as complex as offering a solution to a world problem. Related to the central purpose are the means and the ends. The ends is the conclusion that the reader comes to about the central purpose of the poem. They are able to determine the central purpose because of the means; the means, which are the tools that the author uses to hint at the central purpose, such as point of view and figurative language, are the main tools for reader as well to determine the central purpose.

Intellectual- Ordinary language, one dimensional, used in everyday life for communication. A poet would use this in poems to give his piece context and factual information that the reader could easily draw upon.
