However, not religious in a way where certain decisions are seen as "wrong" or as a "sin", but just the wholehearted belief in god. This carried into my development since I carried over their same belief. I believe this is a huge reason why it is harder for me to understand why an individual would say they are against a specific action due to their religion. Over time I realized that people base their lifestyles on their religion in different ways. It was a really challenging time when I was old enough to start questioning the beliefs and ideals of the Catholic Church, and my family expected me to share their exact thought processes. Eventually we came to an understanding that I would never feel the same way as them, and my parents have encouraged me to develop into someone who I have always wanted to be, and stand up for what I believe in, even if that doesn't necessarily match up with what they always expected from me. My Nana is very into looking at our ancestors, where they came from and how they got here to the US. We cook Swedish pancakes, which are more like crepes, instead of normal pancakes most of the time. My Bapa taught me and my brother how to cook them at a young age and it was very special for us to be able to do this activity with him. Before my Grandma passed, we would have corned beef and cabbage with her on St. Patrick's day for many years. Food is one of my cultural languages, which I value and think lead me to my passion in cooking. I am also a red head, which comes from both my Irish and Swedish side, and I used to face issues with bullying due to my hair color and paleness of my skin. Growing up ina puerto rican household, we always had many get togethers with our other family members. We have many different traditions that have shaped me into who I am today. Although we do celebrate christmas day, the big celebration is christmas eve. This is a very big tradition in the hispanic/latino cultures. We all get together and make puerto rican dishes such as arroz con gandules (spanish rice and beans) and pernil (pork). This is my favorite time of the year because all of the family is all together and it reminds me how important family is. This has shaped my life because family is a huge value in our household. My mom bakes a lot and around Christmas she makes Linzer Tarts and Madeleine's that people talk about all year long. Our town engaged in color-blind racism, a lot, something I hadn't noticed or even been introduced to as a topic or type of racism before college. I used to think that growing up in a diverse town shaped me, but it wasn't until I got to college and explored the various subjects of sociology, women and gender studies and multiculturalism, that I realized I wasn't living up to my biggest belief, treat everyone fairly, equally and kindly. I think being in an environment now, although still not completely diverse, that allows me to learn and open my eyes to things I was taught to ignore. Church is something we take very seriously, either attending every Saturday night or Sunday morning. Sunday nights always consisting of a nice home cooked meal that we all participate in cooking! And after all gathering around the table to enjoy the meal and talk amongst one another. My younger sister began a tradition in our family where we all go around the table and say our favorite part of the day. Eventually our conversation ends up being a family lesson, life lesson, or advice from either my Mom or Dad. My family is one that is pretty close knit. Yes we have our ups and downs but we can all rely on one another to be there through thick and thin, no matter what. Being the middle child between two sisters has also shaped me into who I am today, and I wouldn't trade the two of them for anything.
