I love the images and the story of Sylvia Earle. This has always been a class favorite. I enjoy reading the story out loud and letting them focus on the illustrations. It shows how intriguing the ocean is and how she was wanted to explore from a young age. This is a great story and gets students interested in a not so typical career/life.

Up, Down and Around Katherine Ayers

The short story Up, Down and Around introduces students to different types of vegetables found on a farm. Katherine Ayers does a great job introducing which vegetables grow up, down or around. This book follows vegetables growing from the seeds dropping into soil, to vegetation growing in different directions. I enjoy this book for students who are visual learners as the illustrator does a great job incorporating fun, quirky illustrations.

Hello! This is Maura ElMegeed. Two of my very best friends wrote this book during the pandemic and it is amazing! The pandemic can be difficult to talk to young children about, so this book has been very helpful! It tells the story of a young boy named Pete and his family during the beginning of the pandemic. While it is difficult to talk about it with children, it is important that they are aware of what is happening in the world. This books makes it easy to explain the pandemic through the perspective of another child. I highly suggest adding it to your libraries!

Malala's Magic Pencil

In 2017, Malala Yousafzai was our guest author at our school. Her presence alone was inspiring. Malala's narrative is told in this beautifully illustrated picture book, which depicts the worldview that allowed her to hold on to hope and make her voice known even under the most challenging of circumstances. Malala's message is powerful and empowering: your own magic pencil — your voice, your thoughts, your art – can make a genuine difference in the world we live in. Malala's encouragement that tiny efforts may achieve huge change will motivate any change-makers searching for a place to start. This is a wonderful book to introduce to students during Women's History Month.

Why Should I Recycle?

I chose the story, "Why Should I Recycle?" as it teaches children the responsibilities of having a responsibility/job. This story demonstrates to children the importance of why we do not litter or just throw away our bottles and cans in just any trash bin. As well, more than ever, it is so important we start teaching children about the importance of not littering and properly disposing of our trash to ensure we can keep our community and environment safe. A lot of students questions they have tend to have been interconnected with our natural environment. Aside from the important lesson that can is taught in this story, I also chose this informational text because the author does a great job having students interested in the text. The text involves an elementary classroom and their teacher taking them on a field trip. The story demonstrates the recycling process and provides students with first hand knowledge of how it works. This information is some that adults may not even know. The pictures, information, and topic were all aligned with important issues going on in our environment (as well we were able to incorporate it into our Science lesson). I absolutely love this book and recommend it to all early childhood teachers! Even as young as Kindergarten.

I choose this story because I feel like the author does an amazing job explaining all about the five senses. Most of my students are visual learners and the author had great illustrations that the students can demonstrate themselves. The author was able introduce each of the senses with great examples. At the preschool level it is important for students to become aware of all their senses and how to use them.

This book is about Sunflowers. It goes through the life cycle of the plant and describes each stage the flower. I choose this text to help students get familiar with how plants grow and know what plants need. This book is very detailed in its explanations and even has a glossary in the back to add to the children's vocabulary. Also, I think it would be a great project to grow their own sunflowers in the spring.

I introduced this book to my students for the first time last school year while we were doing an author's study on Gail Gibbons. This was the first book we began our study with and I didn't expect my students to like it as much as they did. In this story Gail Gibbons writes about how a house is built all while she observed her husband building their house in Vermont. My students absolutely loved the process and everyone is takes to build it. My students were able to relate to the construction workers as they see their fathers off to work doing the same thing. It was so fun to see how engaged they were.

Hands Are not For Hitting

I chose this book because it is a great text for my class. I have 2nd and 3rd grade self contained. Most of my students perform at a pre school/kinder level. We take turns showing the different things we can do with our hands. I use a lot of modeling and have my students copy me. I also pair this with a worksheet that says " I can use my hands for" and the students draw a picture or write what they can use their hands for.

This is the 1st year I have taught this book to my 3rd grade students, and I have to admit it's been very successful. This book shows students how people not only live in the desert but how they survive in it through the floods, and sand storms, how they farm and their method of transportation. It shows them where people live on deserts and what creative solutions do people come up with in order to survive their environments. I enjoyed reading and teaching this book because my students are primarily from an urban community and most of them have never been in this type of environment, I feel like everyone should be exposed to the way other people live and strive everyday to survive in their type of environment.

This is my go to book especially if it a week of respect or I feel as the children need to learn to value something. The Day the Crayons Quit teaches the children that that you have to show respect and treat objects (hidden message people as well) fairly and good. The overwork crayons or the barely used crayons express their feelings through letters. I feel like it is very understandable and relatable for the children. I add activities like writing our crayons back apologizing and trying to make it right. This book to me helps children that respect is very important.

Calm-Down Time

Having a very behavioral classroom, I love having this in my library or available for our calm down corner! It explains how it is ok to have feelings, and be upset but explains some ways to deal with them. Children can be tired, over-stimulated, or angry. Showing different ways to calm down can keep unwanted behaviors like hitting, pushing, or biting away. It is a great way to teach a calming space!

This year, my school has provided us with new curriculum for our ELA block. With this new curriculum, each student received a work book to read and complete their work. This is one of the stories we have completed two weeks ago. This text was really helpful to my third graders when identifying and working with non-fiction text features. My students were able to use their reference sheet and this text aligned with their work perfectly. Living in Deserts also aligned with learning about new environments, different parts of the world, and how it is different from where we live currently. This text also helped my students make connections to places they've read about, seen, or have been to before. I think this text is perfect for third graders learning about different environments as people actually live in places such as this, being that it ties into them being exposed to non-fiction text features and learning how these features can help them with their reading.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

This book has been a staple in my classroom through my years of teaching. It teaches the children many things aside from the order of foods that the caterpillar ate. When I read my pre-K3 class this book, it catches their attention from the vibrant color of the pictures, to the sequence of the story and up to social-emotional which are how to slow down and how to not waste any food. It also taught us Math, Science and Health. When I first taught this book, I thought that it will only teach the children the order of the food that the caterpillar ate. It also taught us how to slow down or calm down because doing everything all at once will make you sick. It helps the children count how many of each fruit the caterpillar ate, and it taught us what kinds of food we can eat to stay healthy. The children get so excited when we do activities related to this book because they know the story by heart and I always get so motivated to do activities related to the book and send home piggy back activities for the children to do with their parents.

The Three Billy Goats Gruff

I like to read this book because I can give the characters different voices, making my students laugh. This helps to create a happy and relaxing learning environment.

Reading this book allowed me to work on mathematical concepts like big, medium, small. The students can relate the concepts just by looking around the classroom and comparing and contrasting with other books like "Goldilocks and the Three Bears," where they found the concept of big, medium, and small while listening about the plates.

I can also model the "the 5Ws" guideline by investigating the Who, What, Where, When, and Why of the story to encourage them to make their own questions about the size of the goats on this story. At the same time, the students can learn about problems and solutions. This opens the opportunity to ask open-ended questions about how the goat found a solution to their problem to get to the other side to eat the green grass.

I enjoy using Peter Rabbit to help students determine the meaning of unknown words. This book includes words students may not know the meaning to, but with the correct reading strategies students can use context clues, pictures, surrounding words and their prior knowledge to figure out the meaning!

Apples for everyone is a picture book with beautiful real life photographs. This book is a staple in my science/discovery area. It begins with a picture of an apple orchard and then a closeup of some bees pollinating the flowers , then a bud and then apples on an apple tree, it also has pictures of the different varieties of apples, and several of the things that can be done with apples such as apple pies, apple cider, apple sauce and it closes with a picture of a child biting into a delicious apple. It's a short picture book which is great to use with three year olds.

I would read this book to my students because currently in ELA we are learning about plants. This book is both informative and age appropriate. It is a book that is picture rich which helps gives visuals and supports the text. It also includes a word bank in the beginning of the book of words I can go over (and the words are clickable and provide definitions) before reading. The book is non-fiction and informative as well.

I love this book because it makes learning about secondary colors lots of fun! In the story, the white rabbit finds three tubs of colors and he jumps into them at different times and he changes his fur color when two of the colors mix and make a new color.

I choose the book "A Weekend With Wendell" because it helps teach the importance of communication and friendship. By showing the students through illistrations how sad his friend is when they aren't taking turns and talking through their problems. Then in the end they are best friends and playing together because they were able to share, take turns, and listen to one another.

I love this short book because it was intended as a math book, but can be used as an interdisciplinary text. I was first introduced to it in our literacy curriculum for informational text. It allows students to take a closer look at the world around them. For example, my students love learning about specific patterns in nature they never noticed like the order of the colors of the rainbow never change. The book lends itself to art and science subjects as well, this year the students created art projects using what they learned from the text. You can do so much with this book, that is why it is one of my favorites.

My favorite unit to do in read alouds is definitely the seeds unit! We start off with seeds in general, then apples and then pumpkins! I love this informational read aloud because it still has colorful illustrations along with the information. It includes real life uses for pumpkin, the life cycle of the pumpkin, pumpkin parts, even explains photosynthesis quickly. A great read!

I like the book because it is funny and entertaining with silly crayon characters but encouraging. The story helps the kids who are struggling with powerful emotions and insecurity. It makes them feel that God is making a beautiful masterpiece out of something they thought was broken.

The reason I chose this informational text is because it explains the life of the butterfly, and the stages in goes through before becoming a beautiful butterfly. The students will also learn vocabulary words as they read along and see pictures of the butterfly's life cycle.
