Q: Regarding the great psychosomatic component of pain in patients with depression: How can we assess the magnitute of this psychosomatic component as opposed to the musculoskeletal/mechanical component (of low back pain)? (Marco De Lorenzi)

A: In reality there is no complete tool or test, which can assess the magnitude of how the psychosomatic components are affecting the musculoskeletal/ mechanical component. Research suggested that treating the psychological components has a greater affect on mechanical/ muscular pain that just manual therapy. So perhaps if the patient receives physical therapy and it does not have the effects the practitioner was hoping for adding in a psychological treatment will help gauge the effect the psyche is having on the physical pain.

Q: How do you think the patient's attitude impact the effectiveness of the practitioner's treatment? (Becky)

A: I think that the patients attitude towards their health and their recovery from their pain is a huge indicator on the effectiveness and prognosis of their condition. Their belief systems, outlook and attitude towards their care has an impact on how well they recover. A study by Main et al., 2010 is really good at looking at each aspect of patients beliefs and how they affect treatment outcomes. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1521694209001570
Link for the article.
