What I got from this reading, is that she's using the potter on their potter's wheel as a metaphor for life, of centuring and drawing in the opposites in our lives - because when you use a potter's wheel, you're moving the clay both up and down. For the rich, a horror, for the poor a chance to achieve some of the delights that had only been for the rich. Tea had been rich man pursuit,  and the trappings became affordable. However I enjoyed reading about the object and a thing. Object is something that doesn’t have movement whereas a thing has movement or a role, ie. a chair, glasses, cup, plate etc you would think is an object but they are all things as they have a function. Chair allows you to sit, glasses allows you to see better, a cup to hold liquid that you can drink, plate to hold food that you eat.
