         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li>The role of OTs when considering AT for the population of children and youth is expansive and broad. Children and youth are in a population that is experiencing growth and development in academics, habits, roles, routines, and sense of self. AT in an academic setting can be key to a child or youth performing at a level in which allows them to retain information, apply information to academic related tasks. As children and youth are an impactive stage of ongoing development, the unique needs of AT within this population will likely have to include repeatedly changing and evolving needs. The changing requirements for AT devices in this population can be related to cognitive changes, size changes, or changes related to other performance skills and client factors. This population also will likely have family and caregiver involvement play a key role to provide additional information or perspective on the client as well as provide permission and guidance in terms of feasibility or expense of AT. </li></ul><div><br></div>]]></description>

Aging can cause systematic and predictable changes in the performance skills, client factors, and methods that individuals use to complete activities of daily living or functional activities. Implementation of AT within the scope of productive aging has the ability to provide gradual changes to prompt functional independence and minimize additional unnecessary strain that further advance degeneration of body structures, negative performance patterns, compensation, and occupational deprivation.          <description><![CDATA[<ul><li>Mental health is a field of occupational therapy that can be the initial focus of treatment or become an element of treatment in practice settings that are geared towards other initial reasons for treatment. Mental health is an existing component in all individuals and can affect participation or performance in occupations. Adaptive technology can play a key role in the ongoing maintenance or management of psychiatric symptoms as a result of a trauma, diagnosis, medication, or injury. Utilizing AT when addressing mental health can be instrumental ongoing support that is needed to promote good mental health or habits that are linked to good mental health. </li></ul><div><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li>Occupational Therapists have been one of the leading voices advocating for accessibility and included for individuals in rehabilitation or for individuals with disabilities. Individuals undergoing rehabilitation are likely experiencing deficits that are new to them. New deficits in ADLs and IADLs can impact, limit, or eliminate an individual's ability to complete ADLs or IADLs as they typically did including losing independence. Individuals with a disability, lifelong or acquired, undergo similar challenges to rehabilitation with varying differences. AT for individuals with disability may rely more on a prolonged compensatory approach while those undergoing rehabilitation may use AT that will be phased out of use as client factors and performance skills are restored. The needs and current capabilities of each client will need to be determined before the practitioner uses skilled clinical reasoning to determine technology fit in each individual case. </li></ul><div><br></div>]]></description>

AT can be implemented to maintain health and wellness or to promote adjustments in roles, habits, and routines that can lead to enhanced health and wellness. AT within this category is expansive and could extend to any area of ADL or IADL in addition to including areas of physical and mental health/well being. </li></ul><div><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li>Occupational therapists have the potential to play an instrumental role in work and industry evaluation and allocation of assistive technology. Work and industry typically carries physical requirements that attribute to static behaviors, strenuous behaviors, repetitive motions, and mental/physical stress. Assistive technology can aid in minimizing the negative impact that an individual's work or industry causes to minimize musculoskeletal injury and damage. This can relate to ergonomic education, ergonomic device allocation, or other assistive technology elements to support and protect workers. In this population OTs not only play a role of evaluation, but a heavy role in education and advocacy. Additionally, OTs can play an evaluative role in determining the accessibility of industry workplaces or environments meant for consumers to promote health, inclusion, and safety of all those involved. </li></ul><div><br></div>]]></description>

Because of the importance of referencing and including EBP in our decisions, research plays an instrumental role when considering AT for clients or when considering AT to be included into research being conducted. Advocacy is another key element that carries over through all areas regarding AT. AT typically includes a financial component, and advocacy is an area that is important to use as practitioners and to teach to our clients. As practitioners, we will implement advocacy when creating medical letters of necessity or when justifying recommended pieces of AT to a caregiver or school system. There is an important emphasis on the key role our client’s advocacy plays in having access to the AT they require when traversing different environments or occupations. Advocacy goes beyond the initial acquiring of the device because there will be an ongoing need for our clients to advocate access to or updates regarding their AT.</div>]]></description>
