How does hosting the Olympic Games affect a city?

· Olympics will create jobs in building and service industries, and

how it will bring more people and money to the area.

· Negative impacts for the residents of the city, e.g. increased traffic, noise, waste and litter. Consider also if there are any negative impacts for local plants and wildlife?

Remind the children that the Olympics only lasts for two weeks – what

happens when the Olympics is over?

Will the stadium and other buildings ie empty? Is it possible to have a ‘green’ Olympics?

Think of ways of reducing the negative impacts on Olympic cities.

For example, many buildings were demolished to make way for the London

Olympics village but the bricks and other materials were recycled in the

construction of the new buildings.

Consider also the following:

• How to recycle waste and litter created during the Olympics – e.g.

highly visible and separate litter bins for cans, plastics, paper, etc

• How to manage traffic congestion during the Games – e.g. more public

transport and traffic police to keep traffic moving

• How to reuse buildings after the Olympics – e.g. turn the stadium into a

big sports venue and the athletes’ village into local housing

• How to reduce the impact on local plants and wildlife – e.g. move

plants and wildlife to new or temporary homes
