I could tell that mental health was treated very differently, and sort of pushed aside and kept quiet. I thought it was a decent book, although like others in my class who also read this book for English, found Holden sort of irritating. He is obviously struggling, but he seems to mostly just complain about how "fake" everyone else is, and focuses more on his ramblings than an actual plot. Again, the Amazon reviews are split, with people either hating the book for the reason I previously mentioned, or agreeing with the fact that it is a relatable, well written piece of literature that deserves all the coverage it gets. It is more a view on what adults in the 60's and 70's thought kids were doing than what was actually happening. It was easy to read as it was very short, but it was not worth reading for the mental health aspect.

People were unhappy with some of the uncomfortable topics it dealt with, such as depression, suicide, and drugs. People also accused it of glorifying suicide. While I do not think it is entirely realistic, I think it can be an important read for many. It did help spread a lot of awareness, and although it is at times not very true to real life, it gives readers a glimpse into the mind of a suicidal teenager, a perspective that they might not have understood otherwise. It can definitely be a difficult read, and one should consider the state of mind they are in before reading and whether or not it may be triggering, but all in all, I think it is a pretty good representation of mental health struggles.
