In the past, I never paid that much attention to songs, unless i really liked them. I never gave a second thought to those that did not resonate with me. However, Ratliff's ideas of transmission, closeness, and repetition allowed me to identify pieces in music that I never heard before. Music is such a complex subject. There are no right or wrong answers. It is all based on your opinions and mindset. I really enjoyed how Ratliff allowed the reader to explore several different topics and see which one fit best. However, at times, it was difficult to understand what Ratliff was trying to prove. It was hard to find the thesis of the chapter. I think it was on purpose. I feel Ratliff made it hard to prove what he was talking about, because, well, that is music is. You cannot define it. You just feel it.
