         <description><![CDATA[<div>Abolitionist and insurrectionist,John Brown was Born in Torrington, Connecticut, Brown grew up in Ohio, where he befriended dedicated opponents of slavery. Brown had series of business failures,driving him to move. A fierce foe of American slavery, Brown helped many slaves escape across Ohio and then, in 1855, moved to Kansas, where four of his sons had settled the year before.</div>]]></description>

Free-Spoilers including John Brown and southerners clashed in Kansas earning it the epithet of "Bleeding Kansas."<br><br></div><div>John Brown and his sons retaliated an attack on the antislavery town of Lawrence by murdering pro slavery settlers in their neighborhood of Osawatomie Creek.  John Brown's actions in Kansas brought him not only national attention but a following among those who felt that radical action was required to win.<br><br></div>]]></description>
