Lisa’s brother Stefan was very angry and didn’t know why they surrendered. Lisa was at least a little glad because she thought there wouldn’t be school but there was. There were papers flying everywhere written in terrible Danish with some German and Norwegian. Lisa can’t believe what she's seeing, there’s papers everywhere, soldiers, and Germans driving around waving guns. She threw the paper she was holding on the ground in disgust. Whilst walking along the sidewalk she is talking to Stefan about how she likes being Jewish and she’s proud of it. She especially likes the eight days of chocolate on Hanukkah.

Later they were cleaning and setting up things for passover. They invited their cousin Erik over for dinner. Lisa eavesdropped on her parents again and found out they were talking about his job and how he doesn’t want to help the Germans because he thinks he will get shipped off. So why help someone that will put you through hell anyway? Lisa gets a good idea and barges in to tell her dad he should treat them wrong but still act like a doctor. But her dad says he can’t do that because he made an oath to always help the people that come into the hospital. When she goes back to her room she thinks about how much she wants to fight the Germans but she can’t really do anything.

Mom and Dad's reaction- The parents are really stressed out and worried for themselves and their kids. At night they made Lisa and Stefan put black blinds on their windows so they could be safe and the German couldn’t get them. They also wouldn't let Lisa walk anywhere without her brother.

Erik's reaction- He doesn’t think things will be that much different from what they were before the invasion. He doesn’t seem that bothered by it, but the others
think he needs to think about what's happening more.

Lisa's reaction- Lisa was okay at first and was saying bad things about the Germans but later she felt more scared when she realized the impact this has on everyone and what can happen to her if she gets captured.

The next day when they get to school they find barbed wire around the school with prisoners in it. Her school has been taken over and turned into a prison for the Jews. They didn’t know what language they spoke but Lisa takes out her lunch and gives it to them. They get shooed away from the prison from the guards. Once they get to their new school they see Erik and for the first time he actually seems upset. Once they get home Stefan tells Lisa the plan of how she’s going to get the newspapers from the laundry place and put them on streetcars. It’s Friday now and Lisa is on her first mission, she tells her mom she’s going to pick up the laundry as a cover up. She picks up the newspapers from the laundry mat and gets on a streetcar. She sees that nobody is around her so she reaches and almost pulls out some newspapers. Until two German soldiers sat in the seats across from her. She tries to stay calm but one of them is staring at her, they whisper and laugh so she gets really nervous. When she’s nervous her stomach feels weird so just as the streetcar was making a turn, Lisa threw up all over the soldiers. She gets off then back on a different streetcar to put newspapers on the seats. She’s done at 4:30, gets home, and tells Stefan about how she threw up all over the soldiers. They were both laughing about it.

Like you could get in serious trouble but it also would help some people.

So, I’m trying to get my brother to let me join this resistance that is against the German Nazis. It would help the Jewish people in Denmark because the resistance is trying to blow up hardware stores and really anything where the Nazis could get things like barbed wire and weapons to control the Jewish people. I really feel like I could make a difference in this resistance because I would do anything to get rid of these terrible Nazis. Do you think I should keep asking him? If I get caught doing this my whole family could go to a concentration camp.

I really hope I’m doing the right thing by asking you for advice because I have no idea what to do, I’m really confused.

Lisa’s parents tell her she now has a baby sister, which she likes because she has always wanted a sister. They named her sarah. Lisa gets really sad over the thought of the poor baby not having parents. A big explosion starts rocking their building and Lisa looks out of the window to see a huge fire only blocks away from where she lives. It hits her suddenly, Susanne lives there. She begins to get really nervous about if she’s okay or not. She hears a knock on the door, doesn’t answer it the first time but then she does. It was Susanne, covered in blisters, her clothes were destroyed and she had no hair left. She starts screaming but Stefan gets her to stop so the Nazis don’t hear her. Turns out the Germans bombed the dance hall. The next day Stefan and her father come home and tell her Susanne’s parents died. Lisa was way too tired to cry so she slept, and slept a lot.

I also think a fun plot twist could be that Sarah is Susannes cousin or some kind of relative. I think the Nazis bombed the dance hall because they weren’t allowed in and they just wanted to get jiggy with it. I think they told her to close them for 2 reasons, number one being if the Nazis see her watching from the window the are likely to bomb their apartment just like the  or take her to a camp. Number 2 they just don’t want her to see it. When she tells them what happened at the hospital. Erik was really upset and got all flushed. Stefan snapped and said he didn’t want to hear any of their phony sympathy. Susanne's parents died in an explosion caused by the Germans so she went to live with Lisa and her family. She later got medical help because she was badly burnt and her hair was gone.

Maybe this line is trying to tell you the significance of war and what it can do to people.

He’s going on holiday' I almost laughed. The rabbi going on holiday on Rosh Hashanah? Then it hits me.” Lisa was told the rabbi was going on holiday on Rosh Hashanah. She didn’t believe it because it’s one of the biggest holidays of the year for them so they wouldn’t want to miss it. Then it hit her that there would be something bad happening that day so they didn’t want groups of people celebrating because then it would make an easier target for the Germans.
