They tried to put me into boy scouts. I got to experience how to camp, tie knots, read a compass, and etc... But, those skills are long gone now, due to how long it was ago. 

I still enjoyed being outdoors after leaving boy scouts, spending my summers and time at the park putting up shots. I remember feeling good being outdoors because of all the nutrients from the sun hitting my skin. Also,  there's a deeper connection with the world when you're outside. Whether connecting with people or noticing little details in the world we live in. 

I haven't had as much time outdoors because I got a car. I used to bike everywhere to explore new places. Also, my friends and I just stay around the city and there's not much nature we can experience around here. I used to fish at least once a month and it was a good feeling after being patience. It proved that success comes with patience. He is in the middle of Alaska and unprepared for a couple of months' stay, with a small .22 caliber rifle and little to no food. But, Alex had every answer(pg.6) to all of the doubts the driver had for him. Alex was then dropped off and disappeared(pg.7) into the Stampede Trail. The driver was convinced Alex would return after he realized the hardships, so the driver never notified the authorities about Alex.

Analysis: I admire what Alex did because sometimes people have too many thoughts on a certain action and tend to not execute it. He didn't care that he was underprepared and still took the challenge head-on. You don't see that much around us anymore, everyone just gets too comfortable with how they live and don't change. He also, never folded on his plan and went through all the way. Almost everyone gets influenced by other people's words and thoughts, but not him.

But, in September 1992, 6 people were on the trail and visited the bus. There was an S.O.S note(pg.12) tied to the bus's antenna describing the injured state of Chris, also how he has gone out to grab berries. The people looked into the bus and saw many of Chris's supplies and items. In the back, on a bunk is Chris's dead(pg.13) body.  The next morning the police grabbed everything for evidence and an autopsy was performed on his body. They came to the conclusion that Chris had died of starvation(pg. 14), but the authorities weren't able to identify the body due to no identification(pg. 14).

Analysis: It's crazy to think about his final days having to just rethink your whole life, knowing that death is near. It's so hard to think about being helpless and the only thing being able to save you is chance.

This is why we see him leaving everything behind. We meet a character named Westerburg, who describes Chris and his experiences with him. Westerburg met Chris, while Chris was hitchhiking. Westerburg let him sleep in his trailer for 3 days, when it was raining, and offered him work. Westerburg was quick to learn that he was very hardworking and intelligent, and even called him "extremely ethical(pg.18)" Chris also found a surrogate family(pg.18) in Westerburg and the employees. But, the relationship was short-lived due to Westerburg catching a felony. Then, there is an explanation of Chris's up bring in Virginia, which seemed like he had a very comfortable life. But, it was too basic for him. So, after high school, he wrote to his parents about how he was going to disappear(pg.21) for a while.  Losing his old connections, he created a new life(pg.23) for himself west out of Atlanta. 

Analysis: His reaction to his parents was out of pocket. He didn't have to go that far because they wanted to do something nice for him. All he did was leave them in heartache.

There was a note saying that it was abandoned and there were loose items in the car. The rangers were never able to identify who the car belonged to and just ended up using the car for drug busts. In July of 1990, his car was caught in a flash flood, and he discarded all of his unnecessary baggage. We were able to know about this moment because he documented(pg.29) the events in a journal-snapshot album. His life was in constant motion,(pg. 30) after. He was working for a shady man named Crazy Ernie, and never received pay. So, Chris stole his bike and dipped out of there. Then he met Jan and Bob Burres, who took him out to eat and they let him camp with them. Chris still stayed in touch with them after he left. In the meantime, Chris's parents set out a private investigator to find Chris because after he was ticketed(pg.31) for his Datsun. Chris gave them his old address and left his parents in confusion with the ticket. He then continued this tramping(pg.30) journey all the way to Mexico with some detours and eventually went back to America. He tried to back to society, but it wasn't for him and he went back on his adventure. 

Analysis: I find it amazing that he continues his journey, even with all of the obstacles that life threw at him. It's so easy to be shot down once by anything and not go forward with a plan. He's a real go-getter!

After he was confronted about his smell, he had quit(pg.41) the job 3 weeks after. He was trying to hide the fact that he was living out of a backpack. Making up excuses and stories about his living situation. Chris had then met a man named Charlie, who let him live on his camping trailer. In December, Chris contacted Jan Burress and her boyfriend about where his whereabouts were. They were planning to visit him, but a couple of days later he showed up at their campsite. She described how Chris would tell everyone who walked by to read Call of the Wild, and the author mirrored all of Chris's passions(pg.44). Chris eventually left after Jan confronted him about his background(pg.46). 

Analysis: This was a pretty interesting part of the journey. I thought he would go all the way and would never look back. The cards were in his favor though when he had applied to McDonald's and the investigator never found out. He's also very good at adapting to the environment around him.

Franz was going through it, he had no one. His son and wife died from a drunk driver when he was shipped off overseas. When he met Chris his parental(pg.50) impulses were kindling anew. He tried to convince Chris to get a job, taught him leatherwork, and would give him rides to where his next stop was. Eventually, Franz dropped off Chris in San Diego for work. But, in a letter to Franz, Chris hopped on a train(pg.53) to Seattle due to no work being found. After, a while Franz picked up Chris again in Colton, CA. Franz fed him, gave him supplies, and helps him pack for Carthage. During one of their last drives, Franz asks to adopt(pg.55) Chris as his grandson. But, Chris being scared of confrontation he said he will give the answer after his Alaskan trip. But, the answer was never there and Franz was just left in another heartbreak. He renounced(pg.60) the lord and picked up the whiskey again...hoping to die. 

Analysis: What Chris did was cold. He already knew he was developing a good relationship and replied on Franz many times. I honestly feel really bad for Franz he seemed like a very genuine guy.

After serving work for Wayne, he made it to Alaska and his last letter to Wayne was him living in the wild(pg.69).

Analysis: Chris is a very disciplined man never folding to any women. Also, he practices what he preaches and keeps going with it. I give Chris a lot of props and respect.

His hypothesis was a failure and set off to a new goal where he intended to "walk around the world." But, the trip never happened because he was found lying facedown on the floor with a knife(pg.75) through his heart. The second man was a mountain climber named John Mallon Waterman. John was described with a manic-depressive personality. His expedition was climbing Mt. Hunter, which he was able to successfully execute. However, his mind became unraveled and agitated(pg.78). He never put his demons to rest and a lot of mental health issues went on. The last person was a photographer named Carl McCunn. His trip to Alaska was to shoot pictures of wildlife. However, he neglected to arrange for the pilot to fly him back. He blew his chance of getting saved because he only waved one hand, and the signal for SOS (pg.82) was two upraised arms. 

Analysis: These men are really crazy and wild. The first two men went to extremes with what they did. The last guy was not prepared at all and set himself up for failure. It is very interesting seeing how people live and survive for themselves.

He also dropped out of UCLA to follow his dream (pg. 90) of living life on the go.  Overall, they were very similar and didn't fall into the temptations(pg.97) of society. 

Analysis: This chapter just reminds me of Chris but in another font. Their stories are very similar, even with the name change and disappearing. It's good for them that they didn't fall into societal pressures.

The detective then contacts his half-brother, Sam. Sam didn't know Chris well, but with the photograph(pg.101) of Chris, he was still about to recognize him. Sam has to go drive to his parents and break the news to them. 

Analysis: All these coincidences are crazy without them there might not be this story or closure to the people he knew. Also, it is so easy to find people on the internet now.  Back then people really had to bust missions and mystery chases.

Analysis: I feel like Chris would've been a really good entrepreneur if he liked the capitalistic ways. When there was a challenge he would take it and better himself. But, at the end of it, he lived his life to the fullest and did what he wanted.

Analysis: I feel like his reason for resenting his dad was justified. But, it was harsh on his sister and mother. I don't know why he hated his mom so much to do all of that. He left her with a lot of pain even giving her hopes of him coming back. She would wait and think about him all the time. I just feel bad for the mom.

Analysis: I feel deeply for his sister because my sister and I are very close too. We've experienced everything together, I wouldn't know how to feel if I got news like that. Carnie is very strong. It is also weird that Billie and Walt didn't make the trip to Alaska to get their son's remains.

Analysis: Some people really need to go extreme to prove themselves. It's good for them but, sometimes it's way too much... like this for example. I'm glad he's able to live and tell his story on this. Some people aren't able to see another day, such as Chris.

He recalls that he had borrowed the tent from his father. He explained his relationship with his father. His father had a blueprint (pg.148) for his children, in hopes of them getting into Harvard Medical School.   In Krakauer's later years, his relationship with this father only got worse. His father got addicted to his medications and got sent to a psychiatric(pg.149) hospital. Krakauer is determined to try to climb the Devils Thumb again. But, a storm (pg.153) forces him to descend. He starts to think about life and the loneliness(pg.152) as he's falling asleep. After he woke up he made a plan to go light and fast. He didn't carry any gear with him. He makes it up the summit, takes pictures, and goes back down.  When Krakauer makes it back to town he realizes that nothing changes and he's still living his ordinary life. 

Analysis: I feel like I think like this sometimes too. Like when I'm doing something big and expect a life-changing result. I remember shaving my head because I didn't care anymore. Nothing changed and all I felt was regret.

Chris talked about his sister and his dad being a bigamist (pg. 159). After grabbing some supplies he catches another ride from Jim Gallien. Jim drops him off outside Denali National Park. Chris couldn't contain his excitement and is at last in the Alaska wilds (pg.162). Later in his adventure, he finds the Bus, which is his home base. He has a little journal where he talks about his struggles and reverie (pg.164). Ironically (pg.165), you would assume that he would be deep into the wild, but he was actually very close by civilization. However, you can say he was fulfilling his trip since he didn't encounter anyone. He was successful in hunting game(pg.164) and his biggest score was a moose. But, the sad part was he wasn't able to preserve the moose and left more than 100 pounds of meat to waste. Eventually, Chris tries to make it back to civilization but many obstacles occurred leaving him going back to home base, to wait for a better opportunity. 

Analysis: The life of the wilds is way too much for me. I'm a lazy dude and need stimulations, so that lifestyle won't work for me. So, I give Chris major props for being able to survive that long and not give up. Also, I realize with all of his hitchhiking, it gives me faith in humanity. There are still many good people willing to help and expecting nothing in return.

Using a map he's able to locate a large aluminum basket that is suspended from a cable with pulleys(pg.173). It allows for easy crossing of the river. Later into their trip they make it to Chris's bus. There was a foul-smelling miasma (pg.175) in the bus. But, Krakauer knew why Chris made the bus his base(pg.177) camp, it's an appealing setting. He goes on and talks about Chris's adventure in Alaska the positive and negatives. They go on and talk about Chris mistaking(pg.177) a moose with a Caribou. Chris forgetting the essential(pg.180) items for his trip and asking for a death wish. Krakauer gave props to him for even lasting that long in the wild, and living off on what he hunted.

Analysis: It was fate for Chris's journey to end like this.  His story wouldn't have been told and it has definitely inspired a lot of people to go above and beyond. He would've just been a small town hero if he survived.

But, before this note there was nothing suggesting that Chris was in dire(pg.189) circumstances. Krakeaur believed that Chris had died from eating wild seeds(pg.190) and it poisoned(pg.192) him. Others thought that it was seeds that Chris had brought with him or it was him dying from starvation. 

Analysis: It was cool to see that Chris had died peacefully and didn't have to cause a whole scene to be saved. If he did create a scene more people would be mad because he put himself in that dangerous situation, being unprepared. It was just fate for everything like this.

Analysis: It is surprising that they went on the trip that early, after his death. Some people are still in denial after a couple of years, and think the person will still come back. It's good for them to find a little bit of peace and enjoyed the environment.

Krakauer believed (p.4) that the potato seeds killed Chris because Chris photographed and catalogued it. So, Krakauer tested(p.6) for the neurotoxin (p.6) called beta-ODAP. But, it turned out to be another amino acid called L-canavanine. L-canavanine screws up your ability to metabolized, so you basically starve(p.12). The lesson of this is that you have to be careful of what you eat because only some parts might be safe. Also, maybe only safe during a certain time of the year to eat.

Analysis: I don't understand the different amino acids, but Krakauer was right on the theory of the seed not good to eat during a certain time of the year. I will definitely take the lesson into consideration and question everything. I always hated the way I looked. I would look like a mushroom or have a straight buzz. It was bad, I would remember crying after every haircut. So, one day I took the chance and cut my own hair, I realized it wasn't that hard and watched more youtube videos on it. My friends would let me try on them too because who doesn't mind a free haircut? I enjoyed cutting hair more and more after my work got a little better. One really good barber out there that inspires me a lot is Vicbelnds. He's an influencer that created a lot of opportunities for himself with his motivation and marketing. I want to manifest my life into that one day too. He's able to have a platform and travel around the world because people fly him out for haircuts. 

After High School, I need 1,000 hours of schooling before I'm able to get my certificate. Then, I can build my clientele up after my work gets better. Soon after a while when I get comfortable I can start recording and posting my work and just talk to the audience. Hopefully, after staying consistent people will enjoy what I post and watch what I have to offer. The Odyssey isn't going to be hard, only my social skills need to go up!
