It is incredibly important to educate children on the events of the past including America’s racist and discriminatory history. My concern with critical race theory is that the foundation of the theory rests on teaching children in minority groups that according to history they are seen as holding lesser value than a person of another skin color. This idea can be a damaging concept to a child’s understanding of self-worth. With that being said, I do NOT think the response to this nation’s history of racism and discrimination should be to “sweep it under the rug” (5:40). Considering the past few years and the tragic and racist events that have occurred, it is crucial to teach what is going on in our world. Teachers need to show children that each and every person has worth and value even if history does not reflect that type of thinking.

I think it is so important and necessary for children to be properly educated on past events that include race and discrimination, especially with events that have gone on in within our country. Children need to be educated on this so they can learn about our past, along with ways they can help make a change.
Within the school system, I feel like it is not talked about enough. However, when it is, teachers are emphasizing on the fact that back in the day, those of different skin colors or those who were in a minority group were not "as important" and were not treated equal. Students who hear that are going to think that applies to them today, but that is not the case what so ever. Teachers need to emphasize more on the fact that although history portrayed those characteristics and described individuals that way, everyone is made different and that is okay. We still need to treat everyone with respect, kindness, and forms of equality. I believe those who start/ or continue to be educated properly about this topic can begin to make a difference.

Critical race theory is essential for educating children about the racism with historical events. While the topic raises controversy, racism played a key roll in our history and must not be avoided in school. However, minority children need to be taught in a way that doesn't make them feel like they have been unimportant in history. Students who learn that they have not been treated equally in history could then start to feel as they are too. However, we must learn history in order to not repeat it. The proper solution is to address racism in schools in a way that does not demean minorities. Critical race theory within history lessons is a great start to helping increase equality.

Along with what many of my classmates said, I think it is important for students to learn about the way people have been treated in the past. In an article I read, it explains how there are many states that are making it difficult for teachers to talk about discrimination, and anything that suggest a minority group. This makes me sad because it is important to educate people of the prejudices of history and modernly. It is necessary that children understand history and how to treat one another correctly. Like in the video we watched for class, "A Class Divided," the students acknowledged that it was life changing to learn first-hand how it felt to be discriminated. Overall, I think it is crucial to teach the history, but not in a way that will lessen the minorities, or make them feel as though their race is targeted.

I think that it is extremely important for students to learn about Critical Race Theory because students need to be able to fully understand our history in order to understand current or more recent events going on. I say this because unfortunately racism and discrimination still exist in our society today. However, I believe that there are right and wrong ways to go about teaching students about these difficult subjects. Teachers need to be able to emphasize that everyone needs to be treated the same no matter what. Nevertheless, this topic is going to be hard to teach but I think that it is possible to make it a positive learning experience for all students. I also believe that there is always going to be some type of backlash from some people no matter what just because of the fact that it is such a controversial topic, but I don't think that that should stop it from being taught in schools.

I believe that the critical race theory is essential when it comes to teaching children about the past. This theory allows us to rewrite whitewashed history that many of us have seen and heard of before. It also allows us to establish the fact that systemic racism is a real thing. In the video that Mrs. Weppler provided, one of the men stated that this theory is not to blame anyone for racism and slavery, but to create a discussion about how we all live in a society that we did not choose to make, and now that we are all here, we can work together to make it the way that it is supposed to be, equitable and fair. I really like that statement, because the critical race theory is not meant to blame anyone, but to educate others and create a common understanding. As teachers, it will be our responsibility to teach our students in a way that does not encourage bias or prejudice. Teaching the Critical Race Theory allows us to do just that.

I think that Critical race theory is an essential tool that our education system must learn to embrace. I feel that, just as we have been told our entire lives, history is the makeup of who we are and how we have advanced to the point we are at. If we ignore the history of certain people we might as well ignore history all together. Critical Race Theory allows for us to inform our students and younger generations about what has happened to minority groups in the past and gives them a voice that they have not had. We need to make sure that not only our minority children learn about their history but that our white kids learn that this history happened also and even if it did not happen to them it is still extremely important because as Sydney J. Harris said "History repeats itself, but in such cunning disguise that we never detect the resemblance until the damage is done." So we must teach our students about history so that they can detect the repetitive patterns before they cause any more damage that could have been prevented through this teaching.

I believe it is very important to educate children on the discriminatory events that plague America's history. However, my only concern with critical race theory is that it could damage a minority child's mindset and motivation if it is introduced too early. Young children often do not understand how and why some people are treated differently in society. If they are repeatedly told from an early age that they are are going to be treated different due to their skin color, this could cause children to have lower self-esteem, lower motivation, and even to resent each other from a very young age. I think that throughout early elementary school, children should be taught to accept our differences, to spread kindness, and to respect one another. Once children enter their later elementary years and have learned about discrimination and societal views through their own experiences, they should be introduced to CRT. By the third or fourth grade, I believe children are mature enough to comprehend CRT more and benefit from it.

I think the critical race theory should be taught in schools, but not alone. I think that there needs to be a balance between learning about the past and shaping the future. This means teaching children about the things that minorities faced and overcame in the past, as well as what we still have to work on today. There also needs to be a lot of talk about uniqueness and individuality. I think that when people say "I don't see color" they erase all the beautiful and unique characteristics that race has to offer. Of course, all people are equal, but their individual differences should be celebrated through learning about historical figures, athletes, and celebrities of the same race as well as literature that gives them representation. These things can help build confidence and even benefit them academically because they are more aware of history, stereotype threats, and the truth about themselves- they are unique and beautiful and to be celebrated for just being them.

I personally believe it is extremely important to educate and introduce the Critical Race Theory to students beginning in elementary school. It is imperative that students are educated on the past, in order to show how far we have come as a society in regards to discrimination, as well as informing them of how the world is currently and how we can make a change and work towards a better future. It is also imperative to embrace the differences in the children by representing them in the classroom and in lessons. Doing so will allow the children to feel comfortable in who they are and allow them to not only be represented in the classroom, but also educate the other children on cultures other than their own. Educating these topics such as discrimination, stereotyping, and racism at a young age will hopefully set the children up to be inclusive as they grow up!

I believe CRT is essential in the classroom. No matter what we want to believe about how far we've come as a society, racism is still an extremely prevalent issue. The point of CRT is not assigning blame to anyone, as many people like to think. CRT is acknowledging that we all live in a society that we did not create and we have to face the repercussions and learn from the ones who did. Everyone insists if we don't learn about our history, we're bound to repeat it but for some reason, don't hold that opinion when it comes to the US's past (and present) of a systemically racist society. One of my top goals as a teacher will always be my students leaving me with an open mind and an open heart. They can't do that if they do not have a full, well-rounded education.

Learning about Critical Race Theory is something that should be taught to children. We should not be straying away from "difficult" topics like this, because this is the truth as to what is going on in our world. Opening up a conversation to talk about CRT will help to educate our youth on todays climate and why discrimination is wrong. We should not shield children from the realities of the world. It is better to start now so they are taught to treat each other equally despite the color of someones skin. I was taught at a young age that I would be perceived differently because of the color of my skin. If we start allowing open dialogue like this in the classroom, then parents would not have to have difficult conversations like the one I had with my parents. Systematic racism is real and we should be teaching the world to not follow what society has brainwashed us to believe about it being acceptable for the system to be against minorities.

In reality there’s still so much that I don’t really know about Critical Race Theory so it’s hard for me to formulate a real opinion on the topic. I know it dives much deeper than what was discussed in the video we watched in class but I can base my response on that. Our history is really what makes us who we are today and it’s very important to learn about all aspects of it despite how much it may hurt to think about it. We need to bring it across in a way that doesn’t blame the students, because what people did a hundred or so years before they were born was not their fault. However we still see the affects of it today and it’s important that students know the whole truth despite how it may make them feel to think about minority groups being treated that way.

There are a lot of things that i think should or shouldn't be taught in schools, though i think that CRT should be taught. Before this class, i had never heard of the theory and i was amazed by it when i heard about it, I also was amazed by peoples reactions by it. The reason that i think that the CRT should be taught in school is because we learn and grow from knowing history and we always hope to change one day and make a better future for everyone. This is a history that kids need to know about o be able to make that change and make everyone feel appreciated, no matter their differences from another. I know a lot of my friends when they were younger, they were taught that they were going to be judged by the color of their skin, its heartbreaking to see parents having conversations like that with their child at such a young age. Educating students on these things, will change mindsets and make equality better!

Before this class, i had never heard of critical race theory. it is something that i think should be taught about in schools because it is so important. It is really important for children to learn and understand what has happened in the past no matter how “difficult” it can be to hear or talk about. it is something that everyone needs to learn and understand because it is our history.

This is my first time hearing about the Critical Race Theory. This is something that isn’t really talked about back home but upon reading some information and watching the video provided, I know that I’m probably not allowed to have an opinion but as a student and someone who has heard the news, I do believe that critical race theory should be taught in schools, I know that there’s also a lot of other topics that schools need to teach but I also know there’s a few things that school can either condense or remove as it may not be necessary to know for an everyday life. If anything, I would love to have the theory bought overseas so that schools in the UK would be able to learn more.

I think it is very important for critical race theory to be taught in schools today. Children should be educated on the events that happened in the past because it helped shaped the world as it is today. Although it should be taught, a lot of controversy is triggered by this topic because of what it is all about. According to this theory, the foundation focuses on how minority groups are seen as lesser value due to what their skin looks like. This can be harming to someones self-worth which is why I think we need to be careful when talking about this topic. Teachers need to show that we can talk about this topic in an appropriate manner rather than making someone feel less of themself.

I believe that Critical Race Theory is very significant for people to have knowledge on. It is very important for students to have a good understanding on this topic and information. Discrimination is still occurring in todays society and it is a big issue. This should be taught in a way that every student will feel equal and nobody will feel less than others. Teaching this topic will help our students to have a better understanding of things in todays society.
