Do you agree with Ratliff’s arguments regarding this musical element? Why or why not? Examine at least one musical example in Ratliff’s playlist in detail – how does it exemplify this musical concept? Find at least one musical example outside of Ratliff’s playlist and justify its inclusion – how does it exemplify this musical concept?

In chapter 6 of Every Song Ever Ratliff discusses the value of one note. One the playlist there is a song, "Thelonious", that just repeats the same notes over and over again. Ratliff talks about how notes mean so much and yet they mean nothing at all. I understand that. I want notes to mean more, how can they not mean more. They have such beauty and charm how can it just be a sound. We are "listening to, responding to absences," as the audience but in all the lactating single repetitive sounds what is it to repeat? is it real music or merely ripple in time. That is what it is to Ratliff just a note in the background of life.

The beginning of this song is very repetitive using the same beat to sing "It don't mean a thing" over and over. Yet the notes have no meaning, just a feeling riding in your gut with every loop.
