As said on the Australian Parliament House website, in response to refugees and asylum seekers, once someone is granted refugee status, they become permanent residents of Australia. As an asylum seeker, these people are not yet recognised refugees, so they don't get treated the same.

As stated on the Settlement Services International website, "People do not "become" refugees at the point when their claims for protection are upheld – they were already refugees, and the assessment process has simply recognised their pre-existing status. People become refugees (and are entitled to international protection and assistance) from the moment they flee their country due to a well-founded fear of persecution, as stipulated in the Refugee Convention." Just because someone isn't recognised as a refugee, doesn't mean they should be treated they way they currently are. They are humans too.

It’s easy to speak about this in a way that implies that we can’t help having war-torn countries or countries living in poverty, that it is impossible not to have asylum seekers. However, these beliefs aren’t true. There are ways we can prevent war, poverty, and other issues, all of which people are ignoring in favour of searching for what is, ultimately, nothing more than a bandaid solution, housing for people affected by the issues I outlined previously. I believe in the mean time refugees and asylum seekers should be allowed to take residence in countries with room for them, such as Australia. We also know that it is possible to stop warsand overcome negative powers, which is why central europe is not ruled by nazis currently. We also know that, with compromise, even large issues can be solved, which is why we can have any bills pass in parliament, or have anyone win debates literally ever.
I also did some research on whether Australia would be a suitable place for these people to stay while we wait for this fight to be won, and I found that Australia is one of the most sparsely populated countries on Earth having, on average, 3.1 people per square kilometre, which is obviously enough room for more people to fit in. I linked to a four bedroom house here, which is enough for four people at very least, with plenty of space for these people. It's area is 265 square metres. Obviously, this shows that we can comfortably fit almost four times as many people as we have in Australia than we actually do.
