Not sure if that’s following on from the more meditative style of exercise 2 or because my mind is process-led rather than a production sort. 
First use of ink as a medium. Very different! Marks made have their own plan, the medium and tool didn’t travel much distance before needing fresh application. Liberating approach. Curious to work in ink, try it with different tools as well as various brush sizes and in different concentrations.

For this last exercise, chose to focus on the linear and the sinuous lines of Spathiphyllum plant.  Messed with scale and  spacing in subject turning slender plant stems, pulling out the sweep of arching leaves, adding light and dark areas of negative space into an altered reimagining of plant as a copse.   

Smudging, rubbing back, lifting out areas with eraser, drawing over, varying pressure, making marks at different paces but generally trying to work more dynamically, expressively and away from previous drawings made prior to any form of tuition. Going with the flow, thought and process development unleashed by joining a class. 
Charcoal on A1 paper. 15/20 minutes.

Goal - Further development:
Plan to repeat some of the exercises so far, and to come, in colour - monochrome initially as well as several colours in the same drawing. First step is to repeat in charcoal alone, then ink alone, soft pastel alone, at some stage exploring combining several of the previously listed materials in one drawing.

Generally summed up as worth doing although results feel less free and instinctive in response, maybe because I was thinking about it rather than doing. In lessons there’s no mulling it over in advance simply getting on with it. Anyhow, it’s been of interest how gut instinct was to go looser but a conscious decision was made to decisively work differently to the class time particularly in final exercise. Results feel lacklustre, forced, constrained. Talked myself out of it, made conscious decision to go the opposite route away from last week’s boldness and charcoal-heavy effort to this, using only the long edge of a whole stick of willow charcoal. Whilst there were some pleasing moments making marks, overall it felt laboured, forced, constrained and ‘What shall I do to make it different from last time purposefully?’ Enjoyed it less as it carried on. It feels unbalanced, half-hearted and aimless despite the will to engage. 
An interesting summation given that the subject is glorious, the desire to create and develop, strong but this isn’t wasted perhaps it’s part of the process along the way. Don’t expect things to go according to plan every time and see less satisfactory conclusions as part of the tuning in.
