Roy and Silo wanted to start their own family because they wanted to become parents. Since they could not have a baby on their own, they adopted an egg. this means they raise a chick who did not have a family. So Roy and Silo family might be different, they still love and care for each other like a family would.
Mini lesson-
After the teacher talks about how it is okay that families are different, she/he can ask questions for the students to write in their journals. A few questions are "Tell me about your family. Who makes up your family?" and "Can you tell me what kinds of things make up a family?"

In June-July, the males place the egg on their feet covering it with feathers to keep the egg warm. The female penguins hunt for food while the males incubate the eggs. Towards the end of the book, the zookeeper, Mr. Gramzay noticed Roy and Silo trying to hatch an rock. When Mr. Gramzay discovered an egg that needed tending, he gave the egg to Roy and Silo. Two male penguins were given their own egg at the zoo to keep and care for it as their own.

And Tango Makes Three shows how Roy and Silo started a family. A mini activity I would do for this book is make the students find out how their family got started and where did their parents and grandparents meet? How many children do they have? This will show the students that families may be similar but most are different. This will also make the students interact school with their families at home.
