• March 22, 1765

Description:

• The Stamp Act was a new tax that required a stamp on every legal document. This included newspapers, playing cards, etc.

Significance:

• The Stamp Act helped the 13 colonies come together in opposition to the British Parliament.

• March 24, 1765

Description:

• The Quartering Act stated that Great Britain had to house its soldiers in other people's houses and they had to provide for them.

Significance:

• It caused conflict with the colonists and the British government. This compelled Thomas Jefferson to admonish King George III in the Declaration of Independence.

• March 18, 1766

Description:

• The Declaratory Act stated that it had all the power to keep the colonies under Great Britain's rule. The parliament could make laws Binding the American colonies in all cases whatsoever.

Significance:

• to show the American colonists that the british parliament had a right to tax them and that they were stronger than them. It was to assert to the colonists that they had the authority to make laws, and it was a reaction to the failure of the Stamp Act.

• June 29, 1767

Description:

• The Townshend Acts taxed British imports like glass, tea, paint, etc. They were things the colonist didn't have easy access too.

Significance:

• The Townshend Acts funds were distributed to colonial judges and governors. It also took away some of the colonists' freedom. It ensured the loyalty of Americas governmental officials to the British.

• March 5, 1770

Description:

• British soldiers were guarding the Boston Customs House which is where taxes were collected. An angry mob started to attack them. It started a shooting and 5 colonists were killed.

Significance:

• It showed Great Britain that the Americans were not going to tolerate the taxes and tyranny

• May 10, 1773

Description:

• The Tea Act's objective was to reduce the amount of tea. The Tea Act gave the East Indian Company a tax break on their tea which made the price lower.

Significance:

• It encouraged colonists to buy the East Indian Company tea because it was cheaper. The Tea Act was to help this company get out of debt.

• December 16, 1773

Description:

• The Boston Tea Party was a protest by the sons of liberty in Boston. American colonists were mad at Britain for "taxation without representation" so they dumped 342 chests of tea into the harbor. Imported by the East Indian company. The British then shut down the harbor until all of the tea was paid for.

Significance:

• The Boston Tea Party helped intensify colonial support for the American Revolution. It also gave the colonists the courage to stand up for their rights.

• June 2, 1774

Description:

• The intolerable acts were a series of 4 laws passed by the British to punish the colony of Massachusetts Bay because of the Boston Tea Party. It prevented all trade in the colonies.

Significance:

• The Intolerable Acts were meant to set back the colonies but instead, it made them rebel. These acts also brought the colonies together.

• September 5 - October 26 1774

Description:

• The First Continental Congress was a meeting with 12 of the 13 colonies. It was held at Carpenter's Hall in Philadelphia. The meeting was called because of the Boston massacre.

Significance:

• The continental Congress helped gain independence from England. It also helped establish an army, a navy, a post office, and issued currency.

• August 2, 1776

Description:

• The signing of the Declaration of Independence happened on August 2nd, 1776. It states the principles of how the government and Americans should be. The declaration showed the colonists' reasonings for wanting independence.

Significance:

• The Declaration of Independence gave America their independence and it also made the idea that all men were equal. It gave people the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
