Cady Heron, a girl who has spent most of her life being homeschooled in Africa moves to suburban Illinois. She experiences the wild world of public school for the first time, and let’s just say, it’s a real eye-opener.

Cady is portrayed as innocent and somewhat naive, having been raised in a bubble away from the intricacies of teenage social life. As she steps into North Shore High School, she quickly realizes that high school isn’t just about classes and homework; it’s a battlefield filled with cliques and social status. Her first encounter with students is enlightening but also overwhelming, as she tries to navigate a maze of social rules she knows nothing about.

Soon after starting school, Cady makes friends with Janice and Damian , who introduce her to the various social groups. Janice, who has her own grievances against the popular crowd, especially the Plastics, encourages Cady to infiltrate their group. The Plastics are led by the queen bee, Regina George, a manipulative and powerful girl whose beauty and charm mask her cruelty. Joining the Plastics seems like a way for Cady to fit in and learn more about this strange new world, but she soon finds that being part of this group comes with its own set of challenges.

Cady quickly becomes entangled in the Plastics’ drama. Regina’s obsession with power is showcased through her interactions with her minions, Gretchen Wieners and Karen Smith. Gretchen is eager to please Regina, often sacrificing her own opinions and happiness in the process, while Karen is portrayed as the “dumb blonde” stereotype, often bringing comic relief with her cluelessness. Through her time with the Plastics, Cady learns about the subtle ways they assert dominance and manipulate others, and she starts to adopt some of their behaviors, changing from the sweet, naive girl into someone who participates in the same mean-spirited tactics she initially detested.

As the story progresses, Cady’s internal conflict becomes more pronounced. She begins to lose sight of her original self, torn between her loyalty to her new friends and her growing friendship with Janice and Damian. The situation escalates when Cady develops a crush on Aaron Samuels, Regina’s ex-boyfriend. In a move of typical high school rivalry, Regina sets out to sabotage Cady’s chances with Aaron. This leads to a series of hilarious and painful events, including a chaotic “Burn Book”. The Burn Book is a scrapbook filled with rumors, secrets, and insults about other students, showcasing Regina's cruelty and the toxic environment of the Plastics.

Cady’s transformation peaks during the Spring Fling dance, where she realizes how far she has strayed from her true self. Her attempt to fit in and rise to power leads to a moment of reckoning, forcing her to confront the pain she’s caused others, especially Janice and Damian. The climax reveals the consequences of the social warfare initiated by the Plastics, leading to chaos and confrontations among the girls.

In the end, Cady learns a valuable lesson about friendship, loyalty, and self-identity. She manages to break free from the grasp of the Plastics and reconcile with her original friends. The film closes on a positive note, highlighting the importance of embracing one’s true self and the value of genuine friendships over superficial popularity. Cady’s journey serves as a relatable tale for anyone who has felt out of place or struggled to find their identity amidst the pressures of adolescence.

He was really into how we make desicions based on dilemmas. His ideas were inspired by Jean Piaget, and people still talk about Kohlberg's work today.

Kohlberg's stages of moral development provide a useful framework for understanding Cady Herron’s growth in Mean Girls. At the beginning of the film, Cady exhibits characteristics of Level 1, particularly in Stage 1: Obedience and Punishment Orientation, as she navigates her new school and tries to avoid trouble. As she becomes more entangled with the Plastics, she shifts into Stage 2: Individualism and Exchange, focusing on gaining acceptance and social rewards. This progression demonstrates how Kohlberg’s theory effectively maps Cady's moral journey.

However, the theory does not fully capture all of Cady’s experiences. Kohlberg’s framework emphasizes cognitive reasoning but overlooks the emotional and social complexities of her decisions.

In terms of psycho-developmental assessment, Kohlberg’s stages provide a helpful starting point but should be combined with other theories for a fuller picture.
