Dulcitius Summary

Three sisters are on trial before the emperor, who commands the sisters to denounce their Christian faith. When they refuse he throws them into the dungeon “to be examined by governor Dulcitius”. Dulcitius lays eyes upon the girls and becomes hopelessly enamored by them. He wishes to win their affections, but is informed by a soldier that they despise flattery and will resist because their faith is too strong. Dulcitius then comes up with another method to win them over: TORTURE. He locks them in a room leading out of the passageway where they store pots and pan in order to be able to visit them more often. Later that night the girls are heard signing hymns, Dulcitius and his soldiers go to investigate. He enters the room. The girls pray for protection and then peer through a crack in the door. They see Dulcitius kissing pots and pans because he believes that they are the girls. His skin and clothes become black from soot. He leaves. He enters back into the main corridor with his men, who see him and believe his is possessed by the devil and run away, saying it sounds like their master but it can’t be because of how he looks. Dulcitius goes to the palace to tell them about how he’s been greatly insulted. When he reaches the palace the ushers think he’s a monster and beat him to stop him from going any further.
Dulcitius, confused as to why he is being treated like a monster decides to go find his wife because he knows she will be truthful with him. His wife asks if the “Christ worshipers” have put a spell on him. He claims they just made a fool out of him, so to get even they must be humiliated as well. He orders them to be stripped naked in public. The soldiers ordered to strip them can not get their clothes off because they “cling to their bodies like their own skin”. During this Dulcitius will not wake up, so the soldiers go to the Emperor to tell him what has happened. The Emperor angered by how Dulcitius was insulted as well as the girls mocking their gods orders Count Sisinnius to execute them. Before the execution Sisinnius orders the men to keep Irena back and separate her from her sisters because she may be “more easily influenced” than her sisters since she is the youngest. The soldiers bring Agape and Chionia to Sisinnius who tells them to take his advice and sacrifice to the gods. Agape says they only praise the one true God. Sisinnius tells them that worshiping that God is prohibited and he has been ordered to execute them if they do not comply. Chionia tells him that they should just execute the two of them. While the soldiers are building the pyre to burn the girls alive they pray that their souls will leave their bodies to be with god in heaven. When they throw the girls into the fire their souls leave, but their bodies are untouched by the flames. Irena is then shown the bodies of her sisters and told to heed it as a warning, but she says she wishes to follow their example and she will not yield to them. Sisinnius threatens to send her to a brothel so her body can suffer, and she sasses him again claiming she is not afraid and would rather her body suffer instead of her soul. The soldiers take her away to a brothel, but return minutes later short of breath to tell Sisinnius that she is on the mountain. They tell Sisinnius that two young strangers came up to them to say that they have received orders to take her to the mountains instead of the brothel. They looks like higher ranked officials who told them to tell Sisinnius what they saw. They all go to the mountain to find out who tricked them all. Once at the mountain Sisinnius and his men can not find a path to the top where Irena stands claiming it is another curse she cast upon them. He orders his men to shoot her with arrows. She is struck and in death speaks of how she is not afraid for she will join her sisters in heaven while Sisinnius will be damned to hell. END.

Hrotsvitha (Rose-vee-tuh) was a German dramatist and poet. She wrote in Latin and is considered by some to be the first person since antiquity (another word for “classical era”) to compose drama in the Latin West. Her name in Old Saxon means “strong honour” and it’s been spelled in a lot of different ways: Hrosvite, Hroswitha, Hroswithe, Rhotswitha, Roswit and is modernized as Roswitha. We don’t know much detail about her life except that at some point she did join a nunnery. We don’t know her exact birth or death dates, but in her historical poem, “Carmen de Primordiis Coenobii Gandersheimensis”, she tells us that she entered the world a long while after the death of Otto (the father of Henry the Saxon), which occurred in 912.

The Authenticity of her works had been questioned due to a lack of patterns among the writing styles. Her work was divided into three books: the Liber Primus, Liber Secunus, and Liber Tertius. (Basically, Books 1, 2, and 3.) Her works fell under the categories of legends, comedies, and plays.
