It is easier to relate to something that I feel mirrors things that are relevant or important to me. She has been through some tough times and is stuck between loyalty to her father and running away to be with a man she isn't sure will keep her happy. I can relate to this because I have had my own battles with being loyal to one aspect of my life and wanting to be free as a bird. I crave the ability to explore and too want to branch out. I could never begin to fathom living as a minority during the civil rights movement and the struggles they went through for just basic human equality. This writing was a definite eye opener for me and allowed me the opportunity to have some insight as to what it was like during those times. It is thought-provoking and written beautifully. I am unable to relate to the sorrow weaved within the story, but I am able to have a peek into the writer's mind through the verbiage used. Though I do consider this story a window, it is easily relatable for those who may have experienced something similar. I can relate to the character's feeling of being pushed into adulthood because it was exactly how I felt when I was around the same age. Prior to reading this excerpt, I had no real concept of the actual environment Natives lived in. Some of my distant family also lived on a Reservation, but I had no real contact with them and so reading this piece was eye opening. I believed it to be a powerful book then and it is one that still resonates with me even today. This book is one that I consider a window because I have not shared the same experiences as the main characters did, but I am still able to have empathy and compassion for them. Many of the themes within the play are ones that stand the test of time and are still relevant even 60 years after it was originally published. I loved this writing because it focuses on how important family is and the strengths one may find within them.
