Ophthalmologists are licensed to treat and diagnose conditions that affect an eye and the visual system. Like ophthalmologists they are also trained to do the following: 
  • Examine the internal and external structure of the eye
  • Detect diseases like Glaucoma, retinal detachment and cataracts.
  • Treat vision conditions like farsightedness and nearsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia. 
  • Prescribe glasses, contact lenses, eye exercises and medications. 
Although they can do somethings like ophthalmologists, they aren't trained to perform surgery or care and manage all diseases of the eye.

  • Past vision problems
  • Any corrective methods you have or have used (contacts, glasses)
  • Overall health 
  • Family history
  • Current medications
They will do a refraction test that holds an image 20 feet away from you and it will detect any vision difficulties you may have. Some other things and tests they may perform are: 
  • Dilating your eyes; this helps them see the back of your eye better. 
  • Test your pupils with light to see if they react properly. 
  • Slit lamp test; lighted magnifying device to see your eyelid, cornea, conjunctiva and iris. 
  • Glaucoma test; a puff of air is blown into the eyes to test the pressure of liquid in them. 
  • Colorblindness test; you look at multi colored circles with numbers, shapes or symbols in them.

For example the tests they will perform are: 
  • Visual Acuity; it tests the sharpness of a patient's vision with an eye chart. 
  • Colorblindness test; it helps them detect the hereditary color vision deficiency. 
  • Cover test; it is the most simple and easiest test to perform, it helps test your binocular vision.
  • Ocular motility; tests how well your eye follows an object or how quickly it moves and fixates on 2 different targets.
  • Stereopsis; it is a depth perception test. 
  • Retinoscopy & Refraction; usually done in the beginning to help determine your eyeglass prescription.

We sent her to the optometrist in our office to have her tested for what could be wrong. She made the correct decision in coming and asking for an eye exam because we discovered she was having early glaucoma symptoms. We had found this out by testing her eyes with the glaucoma test with the puff of air into her eyes, testing the pressure of liquid in her eyes. In the end we gave her the option to take medication for it, or have laser surgery. She chose to take the medications we recommended since the laser surgery would have costed a lot. I ran tests for her to see what we could do and what was being affected, her test results showed that she was experiencing retinal detachment. Her only option to fix this is to send her to the ophthalmologist so he can perform surgery on her eye.
