To what extent did the Open to Learning 2 day course meet your expectations?

It was really insightful. Has made me question all of my conversations to date!

It exceeded my expectations.

Completely! I had hoped to improve my skills to have open to learning conversations, and a refresher of how to have difficult conversations. The course was so empowering. It gave time to learn and practice skills. I had also hoped to start building relationships with some of the ICOL teachers in our Kōtuitui and I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to work alongside others from our Kōtuitui.

In many ways it exceeded my expectations because you don't know what you don't know. I would love to do this whole course again (perhaps in 6 months time), as I feel a second time around, and having tried to use the skills learnt, there would be an opportunity to learn so much more.

Surpassed

Exceeded expectations

The course exceeded my expectations
Very insightful, learnt alot
It exceeded my expectations. I had been involved in some OTL professional learning in the past, but this took those concepts significantly further.

How do you think your OTL learning will help guide the work you are leading in your school?

Hopefully make my conversations more OTL

I learnt great communication skills and how to initiate and deal with challenging conversations. Open-to-learning conversations.

It reminded me to be present in conversations. To genuinely listen to others and that these things will support working with others. It also reinforced to me the importance of understanding others. I hope to use what I learnt to shape all conversations - all of the time.

I'm not sure it will help 'guide' my work but will help in my role as HOD Visual Art with the need to have more challenging conversations.

Provide a level of focus, clarity and purpose to conversations that are based on evidence and aimed at achieving outcomes.

OTL will be extremely helpful. Some excellent tools.

Has made me think about change, are we creating change to create better outcomes or just because we think we should change something. Am I asking the right questions

This learning will allow for me to be more effective in my role. There are also aspects that I think we can use to develop our middle leaders and mentor teachers in how they relate to the staff they are working with.

Now you have completed the OTL course, what links can you see between your work in school and the broader Kōtuitui goal of developing cultural competencies (related to your school's work with Tātaiako/Tapasā)?

Relationships are key to teaching and learning and this is integral to the kaupapa of these documents. OTL allows you to understand someone else's truth and seek further information about what they are thinking and why. The ladder of inference is a powerful concept for reaching shared understandings and I think this is key then thinking might be separated by cultural differences.

Make conversations with whanau and others in the community more open and hopefully make them more safe to share their ideas and get involved

The link I can see is that I have been taught how to take a curious approach when talking to people. This has taught me how to phrase my conversations in a way that will not cause offence and to gain the most knowledge from another person. This way i can learn more and further develop my cultural competencies.

It will help me to think how I can help others, what I can offer to support them. It will carry through and reinforce my belief that all people are important, relationships and understanding are key!

LISTENING! And not making assumptions :)

Being open and honest about my own practice and the evidential practice of others will give clarity and where we are at, where we are going and WHY.

At times we face people who are not open to learning and can become stagnant. In my role at school this will enable me to build positive relationships and approach conversations in a professional and productive way.

Not making assumptions about what I think is working well, having those professional conversations and listening to what others have to say, being open minded to change my view when need. Better communication!

What do you see as your next steps in terms of growing your leadership capacity?

currently my next steps are to get more into classrooms to support teachers who have asked for support in using the progressions. In term 2 I will be using a coaching model to work with teachers in the progressions. This course has been very beneficial in being able to have open to learning conversations.

I will use the templates provided before conversations (where possible) and after conversations to reflect so that I am able to improve my practice. It has also provided the opportunity for me to meet others in our Kōtuitui and to begin to form relationships with teachers I didn't know and may work with/alongside in my ACOL role.

Sharing this OTL knowledge with others

Relationships - with ākonga, kaiako and whānau.

Would like to further develop strategies around coaching and mentoring

Better communication.

As we develop our school's professional growth cycle, exploring further the notion of authentic inquiry will be a priority. The work around relational trust also resonates strongly with me. Becoming more familiar with the OTL values and an awareness of how these underpin my leadership practice.

How to initiate challenging conversations. Specifically I will be able to use this when talking to people in my school about the progressions and being curious about how teachers are currently using these in their classroom.

Facing difficult conversations and building trust in new teams and spaces.

Difficult conversations with staff, parents, and of course students. The ability to focus more on listening is invaluable!

New relationships and areas for development that may have some resistance will benefit greatly from OTL.

The way to have conversations to produce positive outcomes

That conversations might not go the way I think they should go. To listen carefully to what it is that is being said and clarifying that I have it right.

Hopefully addressing some of the things that often go un-talked-about. I definitely feel equipped to engage readily in challenging conversations with the skills I learned during this session.
