In the 1950s, there may have been thousands of baiji white dolphins in the Yangtze, but survey data from the 1980s showed that their estimated numbers had already fallen to just 400. Only a small number of these creatures remained by the late 1990s as the population continued to decline.

There have been numerous reported sightings of baiji white dolphins since 2006. Of them, the most recent claims to be dated back in 2016. The most recent photograph that can be used as proof of a wild baiji was taken in 2002. Additionally, QiQi, the final captive dolphin, passed away the same year the photograph was taken. Since then, there have been no confirmed sightings.

The baiji has become one of the rarest and most endangered species in the world as a result of human activity on the Yangtze River. Overfishing was one of the biggest risks to their survival because it not only deprived them of their prey but also led to their drowning after becoming entangled in equipment like rolling hook longlines and nets.

The baiji was also under pressure from shipping traffic. One of China's primary commercial trading routes, the Yangtze River, has seen a surge in boat traffic, which along with noise pollution has made it more likely that poor-sighted dolphins will collide with ships and their propellers. Additionally, mortality was also influenced by aggressive habitat change and pollution.

One thing to consider is whether the baiji's tale would have changed if it were still alive and deteriorating today. Although we can never be sure of the solution, recent examples suggest that we might have a fighting chance to save it if the correct tools were available at the right moment. Think of the vaquita. Even though there are so few of them remaining, it might yet be possible to save them. It costs a lot of money to conserve them, and cutting-edge methods are employed. By outlawing fishing throughout the vaquita's range, the Mexican government has also made an effort to address the root of the issue.

The vaquita is not by itself. Through focused conservation efforts, several species are being saved from extinction. Just have a look at the Kkp in New Zealand or the black robin on the Chatham Islands. In contrast, the dugong was deemed functionally extinct in Chinese waters in August 2022. Its demise was probably brought on by human influences including fishing gear entanglement and the destruction of seagrass habitats.
