Since America doesn't really have a "culture" and most of the people living here are immigrants, it made more sense to us that anyone who identified as American is (regardless of legal status, where you were born/raised, etc.) Although most of our group agreed, some of us thought that being born in America made you American.

You have to go to America at least once to be an American probably, but it's really up to the individual to decide whether they are one or not. These nebulous prerequisites make it hard to create a concentrated identity; however, we mostly agreed that it means a search for better opportunities and a better life.
