In this part, we learn that Brick is running away from home. The reason for this could be one of many however the most likely is that he is running away as a means of coping with the trauma in his life. This is further supported by the fact that he decided to run away only after the police wanted to pick his brain on the accident. (Durrow 141)

Rachel is upset at her grandmother because she was verbally harassing her mother. Throughout the book we see that Rachel has not wanted to be particularly open about the accident as a coping mechanism. At this point in the book, however, we see that she is willing to be more open about her trauma and is willing to share more information about the accident. At this point, this goes to show that she is able to be mroe open about the accident and is able to advance as a character.

Throughout the course of the book, the blue bottle has been used to A, represent a coping mechanism that Rachel has used. and B, has been used to show the importance of certain things to her. The blue bottle in many ways is representative of all of the things that she keeps to herself and the fact that she is now opening up to Drew about it shows how much she considers Drew to be important, even though she tries seducing him to no avail.

When she was at her lowest point in life, the garden suffered the consequences, however now that she is more able to express and truly feel happiness, the garden sees growth.

Well, this is a hard one. I'll try to be as factual as possible here. Essentially as a result of the aforementined adversity and lack of love/caring that Rachel has had, she uses men as a way to fill said void. When nothing came about with Drew, she turned to Anthony Miller as a means to help fill the void she has noticeably had now for some time.
