Throughout the story, the audience is shown many of Iago's vile acts, but are never directly shown what his true motives are. The first motive that is shown is that Iago wants to gain riches and experience by serving under Othello. The second reason is that Iago is a Machiavelli villain, and therefore is evil for evils sake. The final reason is that Iago wishes to get revenge on Cassio and Othello for taking away the job that was rightfully his.

Iago’s jealousy is a key reason as to why he had the motive to ruin the life of Othello. Iago’s jealousy is shown when he is angry that Othello places Cassio as lieutenant; “In personal suit to make me his lieutenant, Off-capped° to him; and, by faith of man, I know my price; I am worth no worse a place.” (1.1.8-10). This is a prime example of Iago’s jealousy towards Cassios position as lieutenant.

Throughout Othello the audience continues to see Iago's evil acts but they never know the true reason as to why he acts in the way he does. In Othello Iago's deceitfulness and jealously begins with Othello promoting Cassio the lieutenencey over himself. This jealously results in Iago exposing Othellos marriage to Brabantio: call up her father/Rouse him. Make after him, poison his delight, / proclaim him in the streets, incense her kinsmen/. Iago's passion to send the message across hints at first signs of jealousy that set the rest of the play into action.

Iago seeks revenge to Othello for his ambition to be a lieutenant. Iago feela neglected because Othello does not assign him to be lieutenant, even thought he has more experience that Cassio. When Iago learns the news about Cassio’s promotion to be lieutenant, he becomes furious and expresses how he is much more deserving for the job. Iago points Michael Cassio’s flaws and indicates how he is more experienced than Cassio in terms of combat “Forsooth, a great arithmetician, one Michael Cassio, a Florentine/That never set a squadron in the field, nor the division of a battle knows. More than a spinter ; unless the bookish theoric, wherein the tounged consuls can propose as masterly as he”, (1.1.16-22)
