Writing was a very big impact on them. This type of writing was cuneiform. They used it to record important messages, and historical events. With writing it made things a lot easier then drawing in clay. It also was the spark of the very first book, The Epic Of Gilgamesh. Other places in Mesopotamia also picked up on the cuneiform script like the Hittites, Babylonians,Persians and Assyrians later copied this way of writing to advance their civilizations.

Religions in Sumer was different than other religions at the time. Instead of worshiping one god most sumerians worshiped multiple gods. Each individual god was thought to have a certain power over nature or activities humans did at the time like basket weaving. But sumerians tried to please the gods as much as they could. They build a great temple named ziggurat. The word ziggurat means “mountain of god” or “hill of heaven.” At the top of this temple there was a shrine. This shrine was a place of peace were only priests and priestesses could worship.

The different cities of Mesopotamia were all separated by geography. City-States were A city and the Land Around it that had its own City State. With all cities of Mesopotamia being separated and scorching desert it made it hard to travel and trade for goods and communicate. Each City-State had its own government and was not part of a larger unit. But not everything was perfect. Mesopotamian City-States often fought and went to war to gain more land. To protect themselves each city built a wall around the cities. Since wood and stone were not that common in these places they mostly used mud from nearby rivers as the main building material. Then the people of Mesopotamian cities discovered how to make brick by mixing mud with crushed reeds and forming it into a rectangle and letting them sit in the sun to dry. Once the bricks dried they made the perfect building material for homes and temples due to them being waterproof.

Mesopotamian government was unusual. The King and the nobles made the decision on when to go to war what laws were enforced and how to honor the gods that they worshiped. But there was also a way to “veto” laws or not go to war. They had a assembly of people who would gather and could say “That is not a good law” or “We should no go to war. In Summer if you disobeyed the law you would be punished according to what you did. If you stole something you would get punished based on what you stole, If you offended the gods you were going to get punished. When summer was weak and the babylonians took over it was the same as sumer. Kings and nobles and had the same punishment as in sumer. The assyrians were different. The ruler was the king. What the king said was final. He decided the punishment and he made the laws.

Some of these include but are not limited to Potters, Sculptors, and even Jewelers although this list could go on and on and on for a while. But some examples of project’s “artists” of Mesopotamia are the, Samarra Plate,Halaf Dishes, Sialk Storage Jar, Priest King, limestone statuette, Warka Vase in alabaster. Those are some more well know ones but when it came down to the basics people made things like pots and basic jewelry (not made of as high quality jewels if any jewels at all.)
