Unlike the American Federation of Labor's specialized trade or craft unions, the IWW aimed to organize workers along the lines of industrial unions. All wage workers, regardless of race, creed, color, or sex, were welcome to join the new organization, whose members came to be known as Wobblies, which embraced revolutionary socialism. Additionally, it disapproved of entering into contracts with employers because it thought that doing so would restrict employees' right to strike.
