In 1849, many new discoveries took place. Gold was one of them. Within only 2 years, the population in California went from 15,000 to 100,000. Although finding gold was rare, it was still possible. The California gold rush was an opportunity for families or a single person to start a new life for themselves. When Americans started to move west, so did another group of people. The Chinese came over around this time due to floods in China. By the end of 1850, ⅕ of the population in California were Chinese. The gold rush offered a new start for thousands of people including the Chinese. Even if they didn’t move to California for the gold rush, many started new by creating a laundry business, working in shops, domestic service, and railroad building.

The need for land

Without the want for land during the Mexican American War, and the Louisiana purchase, our world today wouldn’t be the same. The new land that we acquired from wars like the Mexican-American War, and the Louisiana purchase contributed to our population in the United States increasing rapidly. Just from 1790 to 1810, the total population in the United States increased from 3,893,635 to 7,239,881. Although during this time the land might not have been needed, we still saw the increase in numbers over just 20 years with the little land we had, so if we had more land, the numbers would increase even more. All this worked out because by 1860 the population skyrocketed to 31,443,321 people. The new land from the wars offered more than just people. We also received unique animals, plants, jobs, and climate.

Technology and achievements.

New technology and achievements were also a sign that it was destiny to move west. Telegraphs, Pony Express, railroads, steamboats, the textile industry, weapons, and transportation were all made possible because of the new land in the U.S. One of the main reasons people made these new technologies is because people felt separated from the government, their family and friends out east, and the capital. Transportation, such as trains, the pony express, and steamboats were all transportation inventions during this time. They helped people move from east to west in a fast and better way. The weapons were key during this time because no one really knew what was in the new land, and who we would come across. Another one of the biggest achievements was the telegraph. It was created by Samuel Morse. This was faster and easier to send messages to people all across the world. By 1854, 15,000 miles of telegraph wire were connected throughout cities. The west was the key to new technological achievements.
